|
|
my school has my passport in its safe and i needed the number so that i could get something through customs today. i asked for my passport and the other teacher asked me why I needed it.
im really surprised they had the balls to ask me that at all. about 20 minutes later they come back with a copy of the passport and i said "thats fine, thats all i needed."
i think that if i said specifically that i wanted it, theyd give it to me but i think its totally hilarious that they are this afraid im going to flee the country or something. i guess its pretty obvious that im not happy there. |

They can only get away with what you let them get away with.
Needless to say, you are not their pet - so quit acting like one. Grow some balls and get your passport back. They have no business keeping it. |

Don't quote me on this, but I believe it's illegal for them to have your passport.
Even if it isn't, it ain't right. |

Go in to work tomorrow and tell them simply and clearly,
"return my passport NOW or I will call the police and my embassy and make a complain of theft of the passport."
Then, if you do not get your passport back very quickly, CALL the embassy and make a formal complaint of your passport being stolen by your employer.
Do not pass go, do not wait till the end of the day.
If you do not want to force the issue with your employer, just go to a police station and file a complaint of a stolen passport, then take that to the embassy and get a new one. Feel free to tell them that your employer has it and refuses to return it. |

I second that. Nothing good can come from your school having your passport. Get it back. ASAP.

I apologize. I didn't mean to sound so gruff. I didn't realize that you weren't an adult yet.
(PS. what's this thread about if you don't care that your government's (not your) passport is being held hostage?)

If something did turn the relationship sour, wouldn't you wish you that you'd asked for it back months earlier? This board is full of stories of angry employers refusing to hand passports or degrees back.

Oh for fks sake! Get your passport back. They have no business with this. I imagine they have your diploma too. If you have to suddenly leave the country, you're going to need it. Lie to them and tell them you need it to go to your embassy or something if you don't want to "look bad in their eyes."
Can't believe some places are still doing this. |

at my first job, my coteacher pulled the midnight run, and then they asked for my passport. being so clueless, i gave it to them. it was only the first month and everything was new to me.
i used it to my advantage later that summer. on payday, i made a stink about something or other, and they called the recruter about the problem. i talked to them, and told them "if i get my passport back i will forget about everything else."
i dont know wht that felt good, but it did. |

i dont think theyd keep it if i specifically asked for it. i do think its really amusing though that they are even thinking along these lines. |

Since you asked:
1) obviously, your Korean emplyers don't respect you as an adult if they're pulling this stuff on you. You're not exactly discouraging them by doing nothing and being complicit in their illegal behaviour (yes, it is).
2) You yourself obviously aren't adult enough to take on the responsibility of actually holding on to your own passport.
3) You aren't adult enough to realize the motivation on the part of your boss to hold onto your passport until 5 months in.
4) Are you going to be adult-enough to follow the advice of all the well-meaning (and correct) folks in this thread (yeah, ultimately, including me - I like the tough love approach) and rectify this situation? My bet is not.
Oh, by the way. Ha. (yes, it's funny) |

I don't mean to be pedantic but you asked:

Which sort of looks like a question but without that important squiggly bit at the end..
Didn't you notice the rapidfire replies from all the experienced teachers saying "Get your passport back now!" -- it's good advice. Take it or leave it...
... but anecdotes say that if they're doing stuff like this to you now, it is a sign of worse things to come. We're all just lookin' out for you.. |
