I have a decision to make. I need to upgrade my video card (crappy Radeon 9600). I'm thinking about getting a Geforce 8600, 512MB. However, I was considering upgrading my entire system anyway. I built my system from scratch and have upgraded just about every part over the years - I brought my system from the US.
Anyway, is it worth it to keep upgrading at this point, or should I just start over? Here's what I have-
Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz (Hyper-threading, acts as 2)
1 GB DDR RAM, PC4000+ (GEIL Memory, the speed is faster than anything at Yongsan - have 1 GB of Samsung, but it doesn't allow my computer to boot for some reason.)
ATI Radeon 9600
600 GB worth of SATA HD
Custom case, albeit a bit bulky
500W power supply
Gigabyte Mobo, old chipset though
I want to play the newest games, but I'm afraid I won't be able to...would I be able to upgrade by buying a new system on Danawa for 500-600K? I dont need an LCD, and buying individual parts IS an option.....if I could sell my current system that would be good too. I appreciate anyone's feedback. |

Now a days you can get a pretty OK build for 400-500k. You can get a decent dual core system for 600k, especially since you can build it yourself and scavenge parts.
Your old system isn't worth much anymore, what with entry level dual core systems starting at just under 200k.
You could upgrade the mobo, CPU, RAM and video card to a top end quad system for about 500-600k

I'm not sure how tom is figuring on doing that last line, but if I were you I'd probably build a new system scavenging parts from your old one.
Depends a bit on what flavor memory and hard drives you have. If you've got ddr2 and sata drives you can stick those in a new system. An 8600 won't run the most demanding games either, try to get an 8800GT. Not that expensive and very nice performance. |
