I don't know about Hwaesong, but if you're looking for a Syrian (golden) hamster - the kind that's more popular in the West - the only place that I've seen them is at Dongdaemoon pet market in Seoul.

The expression 'as quiet as a ________ (mouse)' was on a crossword puzzle I was doing. I was trying to tease the answer out the students: 'as quiet as a... chee ... what's "chee" in English?' I saw the lightbulb suddenly go on above one student's head and she said 'As quiet as a hamster!'.

I know that doesn't help you but I just thought I'd share that.

Beumjeong Homeever has a cage full of them. They also have guinea pigs, rabbits, hedgehogs, a really sad looking iguana, parakeets, finches, fish and turtles. (I was just in the pet department last night). The cages are either too small or cramped for most of the animals so if you get one it'll probably be surprised to have more space.

Thanks for the tips. I should have asked earlier, but if I may, what does the basic set-up cost? e.g. hamster, cage water bottle, little wheel, etc. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!

Lotte Mart prices are about 25,000 for a plastic and wire cage which includes a tunnel, a loft, a water bottle, a food dish and a wheel. Hamsters are 4,000 won each. Bedding is about 5,000 a bad or block, depending on which kind and food that lasts a long time is about 5,000 won.

Yeah, you should avoid startling a hamster. They can die, get sick and bite because of stress. Make sure you buy it young so it can get used to you quickly.
