Great actor and articulate man whose kind is running out, I'm afraid. He was a patriot in the best sense of the word to boot.

His rousing acting performance in Ben Hur might be the single greatest in cinematic history.

I only wish he'd made more films in his prime. Speaking of which, most of us would be so lucky to remain in our prime for as long as he did.

So while I disagree with his uncompromising stance against gun control in support of the NRA, I respect what he brought to his craft and his abiding sense of conviction.

He and Jack Lord were cut from the same cloth of which only remnants remain in Hollywood these days.

This saddens me greatly. I agree with you, Steve, that he is one of the last of a dying breed in the movie business. I, too, enjoyed him in Ben Hur as well as the 10 Commandments and, hell, even in the POTA movies.

Disagree with him about his stance on guns and the NRA if you must, but at least be respectful of a good man.

Michael Moore never looked worse than when he "interviewed" Heston in "Bowling for Columbine". A younger, dementia-less Heston would have thrown Moore out on his arse, or worse.

"Nooooooooooooooooooo!"

RIP.

Statement from the family:

The Heston family issued the following statement:

Quote:
"To his loving friends, colleagues and fans, we appreciate your heartfelt prayers and support. Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played. Indeed, he committed himself to every role with passion, and pursued every cause with unmatched enthusiasm and integrity.

We knew him as an adoring husband, a kind and devoted father, and a gentle grandfather, with an infectious sense of humor. He served these far greater roles with tremendous faith, courage and dignity. He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved.

No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country. In his own words, "I have lived such a wonderful life! I've lived enough for two people."

Can't ask for a better epitaph than that, I'd say.

Yes, that is rather lovely. My sympathies to his grieving loved ones.

I definitely enjoyed the movie "The Planet of the Apes". It is one my favorite movies of all time. I think that movie was saying that humans often think of themselves as more advanced then animals, but that's often not true. I definitely loved Ben Hur. I think he was a principled man. I didn't necessarily agree with his views on gun control. I don't think Michael Moore was fair to him in his movie "Bowling for Columbine".

I say to you, Charleton Heston, rest in peace. I am sure you made your parents proud of you.

Thanks for the great movies, man!

Like Norma Desmond, he played a certain kind of role very well. Long on ham, short on subtlety. Fortunately for him and for movies, there were plenty of roles that needed the one character he ever played.

I saw him once on stage as MacBeth, opposite Vanessa Redgrave. Talk about a mixed bag. Yeesh.

He was great in costume epics. Hollywood doesn't make enough of that kind of movie anymore. Too bad. Some good ones no one has mentioned: El Cid, The Agony and the Ecstasy. Did you know he was also the Voice of God in The 10 Commandments?

We all have to go sometime, and he was elderly, but it's still sad when someone goes.

RIP
