I have a friend who is trying to negotiate a renewal with a public school that is not one of the big 3 (ie EPIK, GEPIK, SMOE)....

The district doesn't have a home leave clause and my friend is trying to negotiate some home leave for renewal....

I thought I saw somewhere that SMOE was at 3 weeks vacation (and a 2 week home leave clause)... Is this true? If so, can someone provide a quote from their contract?

Also, is is unreasonable for a good teacher to ask for 2 weeks home leave even if the contract contains more than 2 weeks vacation?

It seems to me that one should get something for renewing? This friend is at a point they could probably get a low-end uni job easily or another public school job without blinking.... They have basic Korean (about the equivalent of two or three uni semesters) and excellent teaching skills....

The only thing my friend is asking for is 2 weeks home leave (and the raise they are entitled to under the pay system for experience)...

Thoughts anyone?

Your friend should negotiate. Or move to one of the big 3. SMOE does give 10 business days of vacation for rehiring. From the contract:

Quote:
In the case of renewal of this Contract pursuant to the foregoing Section 1, Employee shall be given paid two weeks leave for a home visit which shall take place 2 calendar weeks prior to the Contract end date

And SMOE gives 21 business days of vacation as a base:

Quote:
Employee shall be entitled to a vacation period of total of 21 workdays during the Term of the Employment

But from what I understand, the other big 2 only give 14 days base.

Thanks for the info.... Glad to see I was right in thinking it was a reasonable request....

My friend brought it up yesterday and the co-teacher made like it was absurd and that 4 weeks vacation was the same as 2 weeks vacation and 2 weeks home leave. She didn't seem to understand the idea of a premium for renewing.

I posted to get some evidence (which you have kindly provided) that it wasn't absurd and that my friend could move along to SMOE and get what my friend is asking for if the school didn't want to pony up the vacation... Heck, my friend has topped out salary where he is now and could probably keep earning raises if he transferred to SMOE...

Thanks again

GEPIK give you 19 days if you live in the boonies plus 14 days home leave inclusive of weekends and holidays.

You get the 19 days if your school is in the boonies (rural designated).

I live in Bundang (5 minute walk to Seohyun station) and still get the 19 WORKING days (4 calendar weeks) + 2 weeks home leave for renewal.

Sorry to deviate; so how'd think it would be for moi. I'm contracted for 2-weeks Summer vacation and want to take an additional 2-weeks for resigning. Do you think they'd let me take the whole 4-weeks off in one hit?

How else would you claim what youre entitled to? Thats what I'll be doing.

Wasn't sure if they'd make you take the contracted 2-weeks seperately i.e. 2x2-week vactions as opposed to 1x4-week.
