I teach at an elem school in a small town. The VP was up talking to my Korean English co-teacher. After he left she told me what he said;

-at three of the elementary schools in town there will be an English afterschool program, typical hagwon hours, 3pm to 8pm

-two foreigners and one Korean English teacher will be hired to work at each of the three target schools

-the afterschool program will take place in a building adjoining the schools

My Korean English co-teacher stressed that this was in a PLANNING stage only now.

As of last October there was only ONE foreign teacher in this town of 35,000 people. As of March the number of foreigners teaching here went up to four. One in each of two elementary schools. One in a girls and in another in a boys middle school.

That's a big change suddenly.

But another six foreigners, two in each of three elem target schools for an afterschool program? That would suck all the local hagwon students in like a huge vacuum once installed. Hoovering all business from Mom and Pop hagwons, of which there are quite a few, in town.

Why? Does the school board need money? No! The school board is government and gets paid by government and taxed citizens. Why is the public school taking money from the hagwons? If I was a town hagwon owner I'd be ballistic.

Has anyone else encountered English waves to neighbourhoods via elem afterschool programs?

By the way I asked, regarding the two foreigners per each elem school
afterschool progam, 'What kind of foreigners, Phillipinos?'. But it's not known. It's all just a PLAN so far.
