Let's say I get hired by SMOE for this Sept. If I fly over a month early, in the beginning of August and stay with my boyfriend for a month, will SMOE still refund my airfare?
I know everyone gets picked up at the airport to go to orientation, but I was thinking I could go there and meet them at Incheon when everyone else is flying over.
Chance for airfare reimbursement or not? |

I don't know about coming over early and the new immigration regulations, you need to find out if that's possible. But in the past, people who came over on their own dime and/or on a tourist visa were able to get SMOE to reimburse them for the plane ticket. The visa run was on the teacher's own dime, though. SMOE let's you pick, and since the ticket from home costs more, that's the one people usually chose to get money for.
And all people aren't picked up at the airport. Many people already in Korea met in Seoul and were taken from there. |

| Location of pick up will be decided every year, but it's in Seoul. The orientation has recently been held at the Hyundai Learning Center, but SMOE is implementing a new 2 month orientation and teacher training program after May 2008. We don't know much about it, but you will probably be teaching at "camps" while supervised and advised by a Korean teacher who doesn't know what's going on either. |

| ...So this MUST be part of the standard 12 month contract, correct...? But doesn't that, in fact, interfere with placement and/or teaching as the assigned school for the remainder of the contract..., especially when fall placements are made in the middle of the Korean school year in the first place? |

Yes, SMOE starts paying people their regular salary minute they start doing things for SMOE, which starts at orientation.
Coming into a school during the fall isn't a big deal, schools are just happy to have a foreign teacher. Most new teachers come in a week after the semester has started. If SMOE keeps the same contract dates, schools will just have to wait 8 weeks while the teacher is in "training." |
