I love summer in Australia as i can just go to the beach. i hate summer here in the concrete jungle(the countryside is Ok) as going to beach is something of a joke. |

Affirmative. Also, in winter you can buy some wicked looking coats. I am finding it cold at the moment, but its a nice cold, very invigorating, and fresh. Not dreary and miserable.
As for the temps - is it really only about 0 most of the time, except when theres a wind going on? |

One, you nancys don't know real winters.
Two, its far better to be wearing summer gear to beat the heat than wearing clothes from head to toe-providing you're in real cold. |

It depends on whether you're indoors or out. Yes, it can reach -20c up here in the highlands, and when it snows (and it will), there's no snow removal equipment to speak of. And unlike Canada, there is no bylaw requiring shopowners to remove the snow in front of their establishments. The result, after several cycles of freezing and melting, is virtually impassable sidewalks, resulting on people walking on the roads, which in turn results in more accidents. Now, indoors, there might be no central heating to speak of, so a large, oxygen-sucking gas heater might be placed in the center of the classroom, so that in immediate proximity to that heater it's 35c, and around the perimeter of the room it might be 10c, or even lower, because the windows are open, as the students, huddled in their coats, gasp for air. It's an adventure in maintaining one's health with the constant temperature extremes. Small wonder that most of the locals seem to be sick for much of the winter. Dress in layers, as they say, you may need to peel them off or put them back on, depending on how far you venture. |

Hey again.
Thanks for all the help people.
While it was on my mind I heard a grab from a Billy Connelly routine,
"There's no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes".
Makes perfect sense to me now!

Don't know what it is about the Outaouais valley, but it's always seemed colder than MTL! |
Actually, I felt the opposite. Ottawa is a bit colder, but the island is windier and damper (-40-ish C windchill a few days last winter, blech).
Anyway, thanks for the info/comparisons. Gives me a better idea of what to pack. thanks, happeningthang, for asking this question! Hope you find a good coat.
I'm more worried about the summer... |

Another good idea is to pretend that you're a fierce viking and that nothing feels better then to get a good blast of wind from the north (I'm actually not joking). |
Does it REALLY have to be winter to pretend to be a viking? |

The original poster; 18 is cold?!?! Heck, it gets below freezing in the winter. Most of korea will stay around the freezing temperature mark for a few months during the winter. |

Read it again.
-18C = minus 18 Centigrade (or Celsius if you prefer)
That's cold no matter where you're from.
Today in Ottawa it was -18C (-26 or something with the windchill). |

I am enjoying this cold rain we are having today. Took a short walk in it. Felt exciting, but with no umbrella went straight over to the dorm to be back home. The weather reports say it will turn cold tomorrow. |

Today was freezing. left the house in a thin polar-fleece jacket. had to run back and get my long down coat. I think it's about -4/5 C. Coldest I've ever had to deal with, apart from when I went to the snow. But seeing the frozen puddles, and stuff, is pretty exciting. Bring on the snow. |

It was freezing today. This is just a teaser for the next 3 months or so. When the wind gets up and adds to the wind chill and knock about another 10 off the temp and that will be the real thing.!!!!! |
