Hey everyone I just finished a 4 year undergrad at a good Canadian university, and have a 60 hour TESL certificate. I got offered 29,000 per hour no accommodation or 2.4 with accommodation from CDI. I know there are a ton of CDI threads, and I don't really like what I've heard about them so far, my question is about alternatives. How much could I expect to make with a public school, since those sounds better and when does the school year start. What is the best way to find these jobs? I want to make money but I also don't want to work like a slave. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Obviously, my point is that I have read from many threads that CDI is significantly more work than other schools, however it can pay enough that it compensates for the extra work. My question is whether their offer is high enough for it to make sense to take the position. I don't know what other schools pay. Thanks for your helpful comment though.

You appear to have the qualifications to get a public school job. I would look at that instead. The schools hire throughout the year so you will have no problem. Advertise yourself specifically stating that is what you want in the description header, and recruiters and school reps for the most part will respond to your ad.

Your best bet is to take your time. Don't jump at the first offer that comes your way. Talk to previous teachers (if you're going the hagwan route) or get a copy of the public school contract and find out exactly what you will get paid before you decide on anything.

It's a crap shoot no matter which way you turn, but in my experience the PS system has been much easier on the nerves than the haggies.

Good luck.

Because you are TESL certified you will get another 100,000w on top of whatever they offer you. The starting rate is usually between 2.0 and 2.2m.

If all CDIs are the same, then you will have two, three-hour classes with a five-minute break every hour. And the kids will not be able to leave their seats during those five minutes.

My friend went to the bathroom during her five minutes, and spent an extra two minutes, er . . . finishing up, her boss asked her where she was and what she was doing. She wanted to say, "I was taking a dump!!!" But she held her tongue.

I wouldn't bother with that place, but it's up to you.

definitely go for public school. if you choose the school well, you'll be in a position to make up the loss of pay through extra conversation classes, development activities, etc.

i wouldn't be too sure about your tesl certs meaning too much... i believe you need a 100 hr program to get to the next level on the payscale. could be wrong.

anyway, in terms of finding a public school job, you can go through a recruiter or by posting your resume on here, but try contacting the Native Speakers that are already here too. Some of my friends have worked out very beneficial deals for themselves and their replacements by doing their own recruiting. That way you're also in a better position to find out about the school (although you should always speak to the previous teacher whether or not you find your own school) before you sign a contract or get too invested in a particular position. Posting on various EFL sites for teachers that are finishing their contracts, or otherwise going by word of mouth is a good way to find the right school for you.

It needs to be at least 100 hours in order to qualify for the next level.
You will probably start off at 2.0, but if you're working out in the sticks then you could get an extra 200,000/month. If you finish the 100 hour course from ITTT then you'll bump your base pay up to 2.1. Teach a few after school classes and you could easily make 2.6-2.7/month.
