Hey, I was hoping to get some help. Last night my computer died - I was considering buying a new system soon but maybe that will be sooner rather than later. Here's the problem:
It passes the POST with a single beep. Then, I can't make it to the Bios. I see the first boot screen, but the memory test stops at "Me". Instead of testing the memory (the first thing the computer does), it only displays "Me". I can't really search for that in google because "me" is such a common hit.
The computer also froze on the most recent shutdown, which I manually powered it off.
\
I have a Gigabyte motherboard, GA-8IG1000MK.
Lately one of my 2 case fans has been on the fritz but I really doubt that's the problem. The power supply could be failing but I don't see that as the issue here considering the symptoms. I also tried switching the memory with some spare Samsungs, same deal.
I'm really at a loss here.

Take out your memory
Put one stick back in reset it.
If it doesn't work
Take that stick out and put the other one in.
Try that. |

I tried the individual memory, both my GEIL and Samsung varieties. No dice. The memory test fails but I think it's something else. |

Different bios different beep codes.
Start here and if you can't find it search for "bios beep codes." http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm |

Using uTorrent. My computer automatically shut down due to a Windows update, but didn't complete the shutdown. So I manually powered off and then now I'm in this mess.
Pkang- I will get a new mobo, CPU, and memory soon enough. Probably sooner now. |

| You may have corrupted your boot up. Try loading up you Windows CD. Then go to the recovery console. When you get to the command Prompt: Type "fixboot", then "exit" when that is completed. That should fix the problem. |

Did I miss something? I thought he said it does NOT get past the mem test in the POST.
My best guess from the information available is that you got a power spike (high or low) when you manually re-booted the system after the failed warm-boot.
The result apears to be a MOBO failure of some kind or crapped BIOS (since swapping out the RAM did not fix the problem AND it initializes the video card (so he can see where it dies on the mem test).
Try physically resetting the BIOS to new with the jumper (or pull the battery for 10 minutes if it has one).
Try to reboot after that and let us know what the result is.
I personally suspect that you now have a bad circuit on the mobo.

If you have swapped out the memory and it still won't go past the memtest..(bad memory)
and if you have swapped out the PSU with another...(PSU cooked)
and if you have reset the mainboard (as per previous advice)...(CMOS corrupted)
and if you tried to boot from your Windows CD and if unsuccessful then you have swapped out the hard drive for another (with or without an OS...doesn't matter) and/or you ran Spinrite on your hard drive...(massive data corruption or sectors destroyed)
and if you still can't boot from your Windows CD...(indicates a deeper hardware problem past HDD)
...then your mainboard is cooked.
How long did the computer hang while it was shutting down before you determined it had crashed? |

The computer was hung up for a while in semi-shutdown...I fell asleep and woke up to that. I've decided to just go ahead and start building my new system now. I have basically everything I need software wise and can just transfer my old hard drives over. Thanks for all the advice...I think something's wrong with the motherboard, which I never really liked that much in the first place.
On the other hand, there's a nice Pentium 4 3.0Ghz with HT if anyone would like it |
