| OK, on one poster's conveyance of a situation where he ticked ONE Korean off by refusing to eat their rice we are assuming that the vast majority if not all Koreans are the same? Then proceeding to rant about it for multiple posts? You people need to get out more and see Korea for what it is rather than sitting around and posting negative conjecture here all day. |

| So... the complaint is that Koreans, who have a lot of emotional and cultural connection to their staple food, are wrong to expect others to have similar feelings towards it? That's really not a big deal. I mean, there are places in rural America where you can get some seriously disgusted looks if you say that you don't eat meat (a.k.a. out yourself as a Communist Atheist Homosexual). I think most countries have strong connections to foods that provide a large part of their diet. Koreans may be wrong to expect you to think of rice the way they do, but it's kind of silly to get upset over it. Just make a mental note to torture Asians with heaps of bread and pasta when you go back to America. |

As I went on to clarify, it's not Koreans and their rice thing that actually pisses me off. It's them expecting foreigners to force food into their stomachs to be polite.
.......the problem is that you will likely somewhat offend your Korean host if you go to their house and not eat the rice they give you. Not all Koreans, I guess, but a large proportion.....unless my Korean wife is lying to me.
BTW, it's much easier to refuse rice in a restaurant. No one really gets offended there. It's in peoples homes that the problen can arise. |

It's worse in Germany dude. They don't just do it with rice, they do it with all food-- including this horrid bologna steak. If you finish your plate too early, they will assume you want more and load your plate again. If you finish too late (or not at all) it is considered to be rude.
I guess this kind of stuff varies from culture to culture. |

| Well i for one love rice and most of the side dishes that make up korean food. I went to burger king on sunday morning when i was quite hungover and tried to eat a couple of burgers with coke and fries and could barely finish the first burger. All i wanted, which is what i eat at least 3 times a week, was hae jang guk. That stuff is fucking awesome! |

Honestly, I see what the OP is saying. There are indeed days when I'm at work, they serve the lunch, and yep... rice. Good ole' rice again. Every day... the same thing. Plain, ole' rice. I can get a bit bored of it. Play with it... flop it around on my tin pan, until I realize, I'm not hungry anymore. But sometimes, the meat they serve has some kind of sauce, so I throw that on top of the rice. And it's actually quite a bit better.
Back in Canada, I loved rice so much. I bought that Japanese Kohuna Rose rice. Damn, that was good stuff. At 8 bucks for a small bag, it was worth every dollar. And then, going for Dim Sum in Vancouver, I'd fill up on that glutinous rice wrap. Holy crap... nothing is better than that. Rice-a-roni for dinner. Chinese fried rice for lunch. Rice was a love of mine... I liked it a lot. I'd even buy Uncle Ben's plain rice and put HP on it. HP on rice is like... amazing. But they don't sell that stuff in Korea.
For some reason in Korea, I also got really sick of that plain, boring, white sticky rice that my school makes. Matched with some kind of bland soup, it does make for a sorry day of lunch. Ahh well. Even the Koreans at my table complain...
I don't know where I was going with this, but thought I'd share in the rice debate.  |

My students asked me what I thought of the cafeteria food, and I said it was fine. They protested and then I pointed out it was costing 2500 won. They saw my point.
