This is a reprinted article from Chosun Ilbo.
It is interesting how this has resurfaced just before Lee Myung Back goes to the US. Actually, if this drawdown occurs it is long overdue.
Koreans can defend thenselves and really don't need to have US troops stationed here at all.(at least that is what my students have been telling me for years)
It will be interesting to see how Lee Myung Bak's visit to the US will go.

I think it resurfaced because the USA just cut a squadron of F-16s and are talking about further unplanned cuts to the USA military deterant here in Korea.

In fact, the relationship between the USA and South Korea appears to be improving now that Roh is gone. Bush has recently agreed to add South Korea back into the visa waiver program after yanking them out of it when Roh tried to show him up at APEC (I know the passport problem was listed as the reason, but now it isn't a problem...strange). It seems the LMB is concerned with improving relations the United States and the fact that he is getting an official visit to the States so early on in his admin is a good sign that the USA is going to welcome the shift in policy. The visa waiver addition is also a good sign of improving relations.

Well, it's been a few years now since South Korea purchased their own squadron of F-15 Strike Eagles, and a destroyer which is arguable MORE advanced than most, if not all destroyers in the US navy. I might be wrong in this, but I thought I read somewhere where that one ship alone could lock onto something like 15 other ships and sink them all in a very short period of time.

As time goes on, it's becoming quite apparent that KJIl-boy's army couldn't sustain itself for long if it attacked.

Besides, the US needs more oomph in Afghanistan.

Would kinda suck if someone sank that destroyer huh?

that article is from last year...its changed again since then, the new govt is now kissing the bushbutt.
whenever US wants to go homethe koreans do a 180deg reverse and beg them to stay.been going on for over a decade,(and like most western people here i wish they would, as i know how hateful the average korean is towards them)

i would like to see the money the USFK spends in this spiteful economy removed.

i would like the swaggering pink tie boys to look after their own masterful country.
i would like their starving ,insane ,TB riddled brothers, 60miles north of here come down and do a little bit of light shopping in seoul.

which they probably would do ,fairly sharpish,if china doesnt keep an eye on sparkle.

sometime soon,when the koreans run out of excuses , america IS going...thank god.
these people do not really want our support,and china will deal with the corean master race the way they see fit.
in the 21st century, it is chinas region and sphere of power.

the chinese will not be as compassionate to another asian race as uncle sams funtime money injection,24 hour,rock n roll,miniskirt,burger n coke diplomacy was.

Let�s be clear about this folks. When Carter announced that he was pulling troops out the ROK decided to go nuclear. It was because the US didn't want the South to get nukes that they made a deal to stay.

I hope the US leaves Korea because in any war the boys dying will be Korean anyway. But when the US goes don't tell South Koreans that we can't have nukes. We'll get nukes as will the Japanese. South Korea would have had nukes on subs by now if it hadn't been for US intervention.

The US already has soldiers in Japan. Japan is far more pro-American, and the Japanese pay a much higher percentage when it comes to covering bases. The South Korean military is probably more prepared to defend this country when compared to 1950. The North Koreans are quite hungry, they don't have the same kind of equipment as the South.
Still, South Korea could use some back up. They would feel a little nervous about facing North Korea on their own. They prefer some kind of foreign buffer. If so, they need to pay more.
