|
|
I'm on sort of a World War One binge lately. I've read All Quiet on the Western Front years ago. Lately I've done Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Dos Passos' Three Soldiers and Maugham's spy stories.
The only other one I know is Helprin's A Soldier of the Great War. Has anyone read it? Is it any good?
Other suggestions would be welcome. |

I believe Upton Sinclair's World's End is about WWI - A lot of interesting books about this period; I must agree. We've certainly gone a long ways in forgetting its lessons... |

Its not strictly a world war one novel rather an autobiography but 'goodbye to all that' by the poet robert graves (who is fictionalised in regeneration) is a great book and covers some of his experiences in the trenches. |

You must read The Secret Battle by A. P. Herbert
(You'll thank me for it later.) |

dalton trumbo's 'johnny got his gun' (1938)
incredibly dark, chilling tale, not really a 'war' story... i believe it was banned in the US for a period of time... the inspiration for the metallica song and video "One"... |

Hemmingway's In Our Time. Is it a novel or a collection of stories? A novel, I think. WWI is a part of it.
I'll check out some of the other titles listed here. |

All is Quiet on the Western Front.
Forget the authors name. From the point of view of the Germans. It was also a good movie. |

Was the "Red Badge of Courage" about WWI? If so, I would recommend that. |

Vimy by Pierre Burton is an excellent non-fiction work that gives an excellent journalistic account of one of Canada's greatest war time victories. |
