Some of the students I have will periodically ask me from time to time what kind of hobbies I have. I gave up asking them what theirs were a long time ago because it can only be one of about 5 things. Anywho, I will tell them I'm an avid gamer. After their surprised look (everyone knows that white people don't like video games) they proceed to tell me that they too are a fan of gaming. This really bothers me because when I ask them what games they play...they always say....wait for it......STARCRAFT!!! Yes that game was way ahead of its time back in 97 and is still highly regarded. But its not the end all be all of gaming. This is the only game that Koreans like. So Mr. Kim...how do you consider yourself an avid gamer or a gaming fan if you just like ONE GAME? That's just like me telling some guy that I am a big music fan....but when they ask me what kind of music I like...I tell them "only one song" of if I'm a movie fan I tell them "Only one movie." I consider someone to be a real gamer or avid gamer..if they are well versed in the many genres and history of gaming. I run the gamut of gaming. I own too many consoles....play every genre of gaming (sports being my least favorite though) and even do some PC gaming from time to time. What pisses me off is that everyone says this...I rarely talk to any Koreans (and I talk to alot) that even know of any of the games that I play. Christ they don't even know COD4 or Halo and those are the best selling games in the world right now. Anyone else feel my pain???? |

I'm just glad that no one has told me "but video games rot your brain" since I've been here. It's nice that it's more acceptable here to play games. |

Don't get hung up on graphics, Starcraft, in terms of gameplay, is the best RTS ever, no contest.
And its not just Koreans who think so, worldwide Starcraft has the best competitive online community for any RTS (except Warcraft 3 perhaps).
Have a look on this site for proof. Heaps of North Americans and Europeans follow the Korean progamer leagues:

This site has replays with English commentary:

And when Starcraft 2 comes out this year its going to get even bigger. |

Consoles aren't as popular for gaming there(and more expensive I'd imagine), so I wouldn't expect them to know Halo or COD4. There is a ton of Korean games, usually on PC; either web based games(www.ijji.com) or mmorpgs.
Mention Ragnorak or Lineage II and I bet you'll get some attention. |
