How has teaching (past or present) in South Korea benefited your continuing education?
I'll start:
1) Completed a TESOL Certificate
2) Completed a Graduate Degree in Education |

By Grad I'm assuming you mean what we in the UK call a post grad as opposed to an under grad degree.
I completed my Trinity College Cert. TESOL just before I arrived and I'm currently doing an MSc in Environmental Decision Making. I'd say teaching out here is benefiting me and my continuing education as if I were back home, I wouldn't get nearly as much time to read, finish assignments and (lately) revise, but I'm guessing that that's not really what you meant. |

Where are you taking that MSc?
That's my area of interest.
I have been looking into a few distance courses at Sterling university. They offer decent bursaries and I have a house in Scotland so can claim them. |

Here
There's a link to my course if you scroll down a little. Had my first exam up in Seoul yesterday in the British Council offices, which was a bit of a nightmare, but other than that, it's been really good so far. Demanding and expensive (each of the 5-blocks is roughly 1200 sterlings, plus I had to pay an additional 200 to sit the exam over here. However, 1200 per block is the price if you're in the UK and they've just rumbled that I'm now in Korea, so I'm going to get stung for the full overseas fees at some point), but you can pay through installments. The first block was costing me around 250 quid per month.

Interesting.
Sterling is pretty cheap at 400quid a unit
No exams on their courses. Pure course work.
Hopefully be able to swing it. Don't see why i should pay 1200 quid for being out here.
After all I did pay taxes once for two weeks or so. |

Attending the TEFL conference scene in Korea, and hearing from and discussing things with people actually teaching in a similar institutional context in Korea, is probably the best thing a teacher could do in terms of PD in Korea.
Posting in the relevant forum doesn't hurt, either. |

Ah sorry made a mistake.
It's the Technology Enhanced Learning that was distance. Mixed that up with the environment courses. I have spoken to two different course heads.
They are still dirt cheap though. The lower Scottish unis are. Dundee is extortionate as is Edinburgh and Glasgow.
http://www.external.stir.ac.uk/postgrad/course_info/list.php - even going back for a year it's not bad - 3500k plus uni accomodation for 3500k 7k all in.
Not a bad and Sterling is a nice uni. |

I want to start doing a TEFL or TESL certificate this week. I'm not sure which one would be better. Does anyone have any recommendations for a 100 hours course? The Price doesn't matter.
I also want to start doing an online masters course this year or next year. Does anyone have any reccomendations for a good US school?
Also, which do you think is better, a Masters in TESL or a Masters in linguistics? Do employers in Korea have any preference?
Any input would be appreciated. |
