Quote:
For more than two decades after he allegedly furnished an Israeli operative with secrets about U.S. nuclear initiatives and sensitive weapons programs, Ben-Ami Kadish lived unnoticed by law enforcement authorities in suburban New Jersey.

Until yesterday, that is, when Kadish, 84, was arrested at his home, taken to a federal courthouse in Manhattan and charged with four counts of conspiracy allegedly for serving as an foreign agent and allegedly for lying to the FBI about a recent telephone conversation he had with his alleged Israeli handler.

Kadish, a mechanical engineer, worked at the U.S. Army's research arsenal in Dover, N.J., in the early 1980s. He routinely checked classified documents out of a library there and passed them to an unnamed Israeli official who had provided a list of what he wanted, according to a four-count criminal complaint the FBI filed yesterday.

The official photographed pages related to nuclear weaponry, the F-15 fighter jet program and the U.S. Patriot missile defense system, according to an FBI affidavit on which the complaint is based.

Since spying is an on-going institution and governments often know who is spying and choose not to do anything about it (the demon you know...) the question to ask is: Why this guy and why now?

Could this be a mild slap-down for Netanyahu's comment the other day?

I dunno. When you think about it, an arrest like this might kind of exacerbate the domestic blowback of Netanyahu's comments.

Netanyahu's comments were kind of an embarrassment for the American government, because it sounded as if he was openly bragging about exploiting 9/11 on Israel's behalf. And the arrest of this spy, since it draws attention to the fact that the espionage was taking place, basically reinforces the message that Israel treats the US like a patsy.

If this were to lead to more Americans questioning their country's relationship with Israel, then I could see some merit to your "slapdown" interpretation. But if it simply leads to more Americans saying "sheesh, our leaders are just a bunch of suckers", without taking the next logical step and demanding some sort of sanction against Israel, then I'd say it's the American government that comes out the most tarnished from this.

Your interpretation could well prove to be correct. It wouldn't be the first ham-handed action gone wrong taken by this present administration.

My thinking is this: (IF there is any connection at all, and I have no idea if there is...)

Brains Behind the Administration: Netanyahu embarrassed us. Let's warn 'em off of doing that again.

S**t For Brains: Good idea. Let's arrest an 84 year old spy who's out of the loop. That way we don't really do anything that will hurt Israel, but they'll get the message. AND we can send e-mails to all those bloggers who noticed what Netty said and show 'em we are hard at work protecting America and not serving Israel. The best of both worlds, two birds, one stone...that kind of thing.
