I am just starting to teach extra classes at my public school next week, and am wondering what other people do for those classes.
Do you follow any guidelines or just teach to the needs of the students? They are mixed grades and I am not sure exactly what the objective should be or is.
Any help would be appreciated!! |

I've taught a bunch of extra classes. One of my extra class curricula involved us watching a Simpsons episode every class and answering a few questions or just talking about it. Other times I've planned out a whole syllabus teaching them the normal stuff: talking about hobbies, school, the weather blah blah...
Right now one of my extra classes I don't plan anything for anymore because if I try they get sidetracked asking me questions or talking about something else anyway. Makes my job really easy when they always want to talk.
Odds are good that your school will want your lesson plans for the class at some point. In my experience they are usually 20 hours (2 hours a week, ten weeks). Be careful, your school won't necessarily keep track of how many extra classes you teach and then pay you for the 20 hours. The Korean teachers who do extra classes have to manage all this stuff yourself so they just assume that you will as well.
You signed an extra class contract? |

hey i agreed to do the extra classes so i could make a bit more money....your ideas are good though, would be sweet to just have like a free class in which they talk and whatnot, but i suppose i should still plan something to get them started...... |

My school: What are you doing for after school class?
Me:
My school: Here, use this book. |

Thats how mine are going now but it depends on the students. Winter camp was painful because no-one wanted to talk to each other. This time around though I have some actual living breathing people to teach.
Have a few things to look at before-hand but if they are naturally chatty its best to just go with whatever is on their minds. Teach them how to say what they are trying to say. Its easy money. |

I had to write a yearly plan, monthly plan & daily plan for my after school classes. Very brief though.
I pretty much just have one topic per week....weather, food, emotions, idioms etc. & have a couple of things planned with plenty of time for ad-libbing, free conversation etc.
Some days the kids are interested & productive & we do lots of talking etc. with minimal direction from me. Other days the kids don't want to be there & we do more 'formal' stuff. |
