As kids in all countries most likely have ill conceived views on a lot of issues, Korea does as well.
I have kids tell me Osama Bin Laden is a hero, Booshie is the devil, gay people are sick, homeless people are lazy, black people have dirty skin, etc etc.
I used to always tell them they are wrong, or ask them to justify their answer. Lately I have just let them keep their views. No matter what I say, they never seem to change or listen.
What are other people's takes on this issue? |

I don't let my kids get away with it. When ever they voice that crap, I make them explain their point of view to me. Then I explain my point of view. A lot of the time they don't get it. The problem now is that the smarter kids now know how to hijack one of my classes. It does get tiresome.
There are bigger things out there than english ... |

You have little chance of reforming their diseased viewpoints on life because their parents obviously reinforce them. i think its enough just to plant that seed of doubt, of a different viewpoint in their heads. |

As a teacher of children, kids look to you not just to teach you about English, but other things as well. One of the reasons they may say those things is that they are looking for confirmation. If you ignore it and nod in agreement, that will only reinforce their views. Kids have very fragile open minds, so don't think they can't be changed. |

Here's my theory: you've never taught kids before. |

Every chance I get, I try to point out how silly this is to my students. I especially like it when they say Oh no, when they've done something wrong. At that point I tell them they must love Anton Ono or they wouldn't say his name so often. |

It depends on the context. Sometimes they are looking to disrupt the classes buy yelling out f***ing USA in class etc.
But in general I tend to instill values in them that I have eg. I don't let kids hit eachother in class, learning to share things, respecting other peoples property etc.

It's true that I'm not a kids' teacher by trade, but I have taught a few kids' classes in the past, and the kids soimetimes came to me with questions about stereotypes of certain people in the west, figuring that I probably knew more about it than those in their own country from whom they had heard about it. In such situations, I wouldn't have felt I was doing right if I just nodded in agreement to everything to all judgements that the kids seemed to have.
Granted, blurting out offensive things is a little different than asking honest questions. However, they are just kids after all, and I believe that their misinformed assumptions can easily be changed with a little attention to the issues. |

best 1 yet i have seen was on cnn last year during the protests before the elections..
this STUPID girl was walking down the street, she was wearing american rap dancing clothes, had bleached blond hair, a new york yankee baseball cap and was holding a sign saying 'yankee go home'.
my wife is korean, speaks excellent english but she would never choose an english tv program to watch.. not even have a look whats on the channels
they have raped what they want from the west and now want us to leave.. drives me crazy.. first time i heard osama is great, i hit the roof.. i pointed out that many innocent koreans were also killed.. they shrug it off and still say he is great.
very, very narrow minded people here..
love the way kim chi cures everything. these guys eat the dirtiest stuff on the planet (because, at 1 time, i understand they had to) and claim it is the best.. let them have their sticks, leaves and bugs...
hate when i go to mcdonalds and their are no cheeseburgers or big macs ready just 100 bulgogi burgers.. when i ask the average korean if they like big macs they say 'no'. why? because korean people only like bulgogi burgers..
this may getting off the topic but i think it all relates in a round-a-bout way..
this comes from somewhere.. maybe the fact they were oppressed for centuries and now they have a little clout in the world.. i dont really know..
next time somebody says anything bad about the US especially about the deal to buy loads of military equipment from them, mention that america gives korea more financial support than any other country in the world.
end it bro
apart from nit picking this place is great! $6 bottle of vodka.. yessss |

I EDUCATE my KIDS IN LOGIC!!
If I can chane one childs polluted mind into an open mind I have succeeded. today I taught my conversation student about who are Americans, who are Australians? who are people and what makes us what we are.. cant blame a nations people for history,.
and the end of the lesson he was not only so interested in history but he had a different prespective of countries..
I have been doing this for 7 years..
yesterdays conversation class two girls 10 and 11.. first thing I asked them tell me which countries you hate?
JAPAN- we all know why..
China- support NK and killed SK people.
France- because they stole the south korean book.
USA- JUST BECAUSE..
seems to be a trend in korea..
I tried to explain to them how American helped them blar blar..
they didnt care,, because they are getting brainwashed at school by the teachers and the media..
This countries is not helping this racism problem.. but making it worse..
the problem is the government lets this racist behaviour go on..
anyway I will still converse with logic and truth. and maybe just maybe I can change their views and try to get them to see the world ona greater scale.. this world is very complicated their are so many things surrounding the truth that we can even imagine..and we will never even know.. but I stick to what I know and what we all know.. basic history and why hating others will only make you a bad person.. |

Those bulgogi burgers are terrible. They put some teriyaki/babrecue sauce on them, and it's just not right.
I always order the double cheeseburger. There is never one waiting.
I also had ver limited experience teaching children before coming here. I had never heard such a ridiculous thing as Bin Laden being a hero before I came here.
They hate France too? They join the rest of the world. |

Perhaps you should mention people like Ronaldo to them and use good examples of people who theyare familar with. Let's not forget that Korea is a very isolated country and it was only a few decades ago, when in the west, poepl had the same views.
If you look at the furor over weapons of mass distraction in the media and the treatment of Arabs by such enlightened western countries as USA, then sometimes, I wonder if we are not as bigoted it is just directed a little differently |

How old are the kids? It won't be possible to reason logically at least until they are in high school. |
