|
|
I finish my contract in 2 months and was wondering if it is possible to receive a sum equivalent (or a little less) in cash instead of airfare? Can I just buy the ticket, get the money from SMOE and then cancel it? I don't see any reason why they wouldn't want to do this as they are paying the same amount to me either way and both parties benefit. Excuse me if this question has been asked before but the search function is terrible and I need an up to date answer. Thanks |

Roryb,
No problem doing that, imo. I know many teachers who've done that and it is more common in SMOE than people think.
There is a "book" rate that you'll max out at , depending on your home destination. That's all. SMOE will pay you a return airfare. How you go about that, is all in your hands.
Cheers,

Do we have to use Korean Air when flying over? Will there be problems with reimbursement if another airline is chosen? |

If you are paying for your own ticket and getting reimbursed later you do NOT have to fly KAL.
IF you want/need a prepaid ticket to Korea, they will book you onto a KAL flight whenever possible. |

So should I mention what I am doing to SMOE or just go ahead and book the ticket and then cancel it after a receive the money? Will they not receive notification of the cancellation of the ticket? Not exactly sure what is the best way to go about this so any advice appreciated.
PS I really appreciate all the work you are doing. The resources on your site were incredibly useful as a newbie elementary school teacher |

Rory,
thanks and the site is one big experiment.....learning lots and appreciate the feedback from teachers. The new SHARING aspect will help and I hope other teachers contribute.
I wouldn't mention it -- that's my motto when working "with" bureaucracy. What they don't know, won't hurt them. This is how other teachers have handled it and you are doing nothing wrong at all so why complicate things. There is no notification of the cancelled ticket other than to yourself and SMOE only needs the receipt to fulfill their paper requirements and legitimize the process.....I wouldn't worry and if ever asked, just say what you did.

Just to give others an idea - I asked today about Toronto and the "book" value, the max for a flight to Toronto that SMOE will pay is 2,100,000 won. |

Korean air is great. The usually have those screens in the back of the seats in front of you which make the trip pretty fun. The flight attendants were pretty and helpful, and the food was pretty good. In general, if your employer is willing to pay for Korean Air then take it unless you can't get a flight at a specific time that you need. |

I just received a reply e-mail from the ETIS Coordinator at SMOE. He said that SMOE will NOT pay the cash equivalent of the air ticket to your home. They will only purchase the ticket once you have submitted the reservation number. |

All NSETs should have received the paperwork for renewals by now, as they are due tomorrow.
In the paperwork, there is a form "Application for Airfare Reimbursement."
It reads "I would likek to apply for my airfare reimbursement to travel to my home country in accordance with ARtcle 10 of the Contract..."
They ask for the price on the ticket, the actual price you paid and the requested reimbursement amount. They ask for a copy of the flight tickets and a receipt that shows the actual price paid.
Instructions from SMOE state that you can make a Korean Air reservation which will be paid by SMOE after you make a reservation. If you choose another airline, you have to pay for it and will be reimbursed later. |

Yes, you just have to go through the hurdles, loops to get cash
About Korean air. If you use Korean Air, it makes life a lot easier probably re - the above. Also included in the renewal info. should be a phone number to the Korean Air reservation clerk handling SMOE. Great English, just book it. Another good office is Coex, at the back of the building in the terminal section. If anyone needs the number, let me know. I'm not at the office now or i'd post.

use a travel agent; explain you want a tkt that can be canceled if necessary; you are unsure of your plans (so he doesn't book a nonfundable one)
book the ticket, pay for it.
take all the info to whomever you are supposed to all with the receipt.
you will be refunded in a couple of days.
cancel the ticket.
SMOE will make your life as difficult as they possibly can; the money goes to the district office. Teachers who for whatever reason don't get return tickets then the money stays there at the district office. guess where it winds up. if you want to go elsewhere after your contract, don't even bother discussing it just follow whatever they need and give them the receipt.
they need the receipt for their auditors, it's very important.
don't sweat this, it's not worth it. been there, done that. long story. you can make it work for you, trust me on that one. |

Yeah, I have flown Korean Air four times, but I am coming to Korea early and need to pay for my own ticket. I am seeing one-way flights for like $600 and would rather pay that amount now. |
