Posted: Thu May 08, 2008 2:21 pm Post subject: English Channel? Advice Please! |
|
|
Im thinking about English Channel as a possible employer next year. Does anyone have any experience with it? Ive only been able to find one forum topic about it, in which it was rated fairly negatively.
Does anyone have any opinions of the group? Most of the complaints were directed at unpaid training and the dress code (lab coats and having to keep up an immaculate appearance). From what Ive read, it is very much like what Im doing here in the states currently. On the surface, the vacation time looks like most other private jobs Ive seen.
What is a typical day like? Is it 8 hours with non-stop tutoring, or is there sufficient down time? Can you pick and choose what months you want to work Saturdays? How is the management?
Where are the locations? Im interested in central Seoul, like most people.
Thanks for any advice or comments! PM me if you work there currently, or have worked there in the past.
Thanks! |

There are many posts here about English Channel, I don't recall seeing one that was good. Based on what others have said, run don't walk! |

Thanks for the responses. Does anyone know about where they are located and where they put you in housing? Any opinions on the housing? Also, on the website it says "In addition to Korean national holidays, there are ten days of unpaid vacation per year." Is this typical for private schools? If there is a monthly salary, how can you get unpaid vacation? Would they just take out whatever the difference in total hours is? |

hagwons normally have 10 paid days of vacation and public schools can have 14+ paid days, depending on location |

I've met people that worked there, and they were happy enough. It sounds like a typical large hagwon gig. No kids, which can be good for some, and long hours due to the splits.
MY advice for the OP. If it's your first contract, then I'd consider it seriously. It's not the best, but you'll get paid, and on time and it's a fairly safe start to Korea. You can always look for something better after a while, or try to hook up privates with some of your students. |

10 days unpaid leave is illegal, full stop. |
