I just drove down the hill to the little village next to the apt complex. As I drove in the entrance there were 4 cops in white coverall thingies with white surgical masks and goggles. They were spraying cars going in and coming out, mainly aiming for the tires and front bumper. The hose was hooked to a big white truck. There wasn't much of a smell.

On the way out I rolled down my window and asked what was going on. The answer was "AI".

Shocked

Could there possibly be any connection, or did I just speak to a cop who was too intimidated by a white face?

I guess they're spraying disinfectant under the cars where all the mud and crud gets built up. They did the same with foot and mouth disease a few years ago.

Does that have any effect on bird flu virus? I have the feeling that if a diseased bird hit the grill on the front of my car, it would get a massive dose of disinfectant. Would the microsecond before death help it? Or us?

I might have been somewhat sensitized to this issue since we talked about natural disasters in the class just before I drove to the store to buy cigarettes. During the class a student mentioned that a dead bird had been found on the ground next to the tennis court Monday evening. Yesterday Mr. Woo was sick. The students were afraid to sit next to him. As I was leaving school I saw 7 students next to the tennis court looking for the dead bird.

They have automatic sprayers in the countrysides. I ride my motorcycle all over and come up to these things. Sometimes the workers turn them off. Sometimes they are automatic or no one turns them off and I go into the other lane to avoid them. Sometimes there is no choice but to speed through as quickly as possible. Utter bullshit.

AI is very infectious to birds, not as much to humans . I can be carried in to an area by dirt and debris on a car or even your feet. You may think this is a silly precaution, but the farmers and poultry companies are facing huge loses, an average commercial flock is about 20,000 birds. On top of that, the chicken houses aren't considered "disease free" for at least 2 years after an AI infection. That means the farmer is just SOL for making an income off the houses for 2 years or more.
As far as being infectious to humans, the F5-N1 virus has to be inhaled deeply into the lungs and at a pretty large dose. Most of the people who have had it work with poultry.
