My question is mostly about the six-month rule which says an employer must give 30 days notice or 30 days pay before firing an employee. I signed my contract November 15. But I came over on a tourist visa and then did a visa run 3 weeks later. I am not going to admit that I was working for three weeks without a visa ( Very Happy ) but I think we can all read between the lines.

So, my question, as far as the six month rule is concerned, is my first six months completed on May 15th (6 months from the contract signing) or June 7th (6 months from the day my work visa was granted?

IF you are talking about the labor standards act, it would be 6 months from the date when you LEGALLY started work.

(side note: you could count the time when you were working illegally but you would be subject to penalty and prosecution for visa violations - by your own admission - so I would advise against it. This is NOT home. Here you are guilty until proven innocent.)

If you are talking about some clause in your contract, then it would be subject to interpretation as to when you "started work".
