I thought AB types were the universal recipient. Well, AB+ anyway. Maybe it has changed since I was in science classes, but AB can take blood from anyone. So, I think you will be fine. |

AB is the universal recipient of Blood cells. We can only donate to other AB though. however, our plasma can be given to everyone else. |

Sometimes it's nice to be A+, which is the most common bloodtype in almost any country.
I don't want your dirty foreigner blood. You all have AIDS. |

Had my health check yesterday for my new Visa. So, hopefully by this time tomorrow I'll know for sure what's my actual blood type. I know it's either A or O as my Dad's one and Mum's the other, can't remember which is which though. |

Thanks for the clarification. There are so many different factors when it comes to blood. I do remember that AB could only donate to AB. Hopefully no one on this board will need a transfusion any time soon. |

Sorry I'm not sure of my blood type though I did check Wikipedia which has a chart on the breakdown of blood types for various countries and only 0.1% of the Korean population (or about 50,000 people) has O- blood. |
You think that's bad.. I'm AB- and after checking wiki. There's only .05 %... i'm screwed LOL |
You're not screwed at all. You can receive from any negative type (A-, B-, AB-, O-).
Another O- negative here, we have to depend on ourselves! |

I have a friend who had heart surgery recently and she has Type 0 Negative blood. Given the difficulty of finding people with that blood type, I am helping her out.
Type O Negative blood will be needed only in the event of another heart surgery. We all hope that there will not be another surgery, but if they must operate they will need blood donors.
In the event of another surgery, the hospital will contact you and ask you to come to Sosa Station on line 1. They are happy to pick you up from there. At the hospital, they will ask you a few questions, do a blood test and then have you donate blood.
If you are willing to be contacted in the event of another surgery, please send me your name, phone number, email and employers name (the hospital asked for this). If you want to deal with the hospital directly instead of having me forward your information, let me know and Ill send you their number.
Thank you, BB |

I am also O-.
Once O- always O-.
Blood type cannot change.
O- IS the universal donor.
I've donated lots of times: at home the Blood Bank used to ring me up for donations on a regular basis.
I'm up for it, if anyone needs it. |

I'm o- but when I tried to donate in Korea (with my bood card ID) they turned me away because I'm a foreigner.
Unbelievable, since in NZ I'm called up and sent reminder letters because there is always a need for o- |

AIDS? That's sooo 2007.
2008 is the year of mad cow disease, vCJD.
As a Brit I'm banned from giving blood in countries including the US, France and Korea. This also includes people who have stayed in Britain for more than six months, which would also include many Korean oversea students.
Hopefully Korea will get its act together and deport me. |

My friend (she is Korean) talked to the hospital about it. Being a foreigner is not a problem in my friend's case. She knows I am recruiting foreigners and the hospital knows it. |

I'm bumping this thread as I need more names on the O- list. I have a couple of names at the moment but for all you guys that have responded to this thread and havn't pm'ed me with your details and are willing to please feel free. I am willing to be a point of contact for all of you in case of an emergency in that you need O- blood. I will have the list on me at all times as my little man who is O- is also a haemophiliac,( although it is a mild case)so for me it is really important to be ready incase of emergency. If you pm me I will email you back with my name and mobile ph. no. so that you can carry it around in your wallets or whatever and phone me or have the hospital phone at anytime for me to make contact with other O-'s that are willing to donate. I will also send you the list of contacts, as long as people are willing to have on file somewhere handy.
I will be in Korea for a few more years, when I leave I will find someone to keep the list updated and have a new contact no. incase of emergency.
This may seem trivial now, but it could mean life or death in some cases for those of us with rare blood types.
I have also been advised by my doctor to get my son a universal medical braclet with his blood type on it, he was actually surprised that I didn't have one already being that he is O-.( something to think about).
thanks |
