I hope your pay (or pay increase) reflects this reality. I hope you understand that teachers, especially professors, are highly respected. Professors usually are paid some of the highest salaries in Korea.

The nations per capita income is expected to exceed $11,000 this year, meaning the average South Korean is earning more than ever before, the Bank of Korea (BOK) reported on Tuesday.

Might be my own fault for not changing jobs, but I haven't had a raise since 1998. I am not earning more than ever before. Crying or Very sad

I am sure most of us are making at least 2, 3, or 4 times the $11,000 the average Korean earns.

Yes, yes I know that includes many people who still live at home, etc.

$11,000 a year is the average income of a Korean? Is that for real? Who? Bartenders, waiters, etc?

But the currency is worth nearly twice what is was back then, so your buying power outside the country has nearly doubled.

Minimum wage in Korea is a little over 2000 Won an hour. So if you line up a job with no work like at a PC room for 40 hours a week, your take home pay before deductions will be a whopping 100,000. Or about $5000 a year.

That seems a little low for a lawyer. I cannot believe I make more than a lawyer.

Are you a lawyer or a teacher?

How many university professors earn $5,000 (5,931,750 won) each month? How many foreign professors earn $5,000 (5,931,750 won) each month? Remember: Most Korean professors teach 9 to 12 hours each week. Some Korean professors only teach 6 hours each week. Most foreign professors teach 16 to 24 hours each week.

Professor: $5,511

Some may respond with
"But to be a professor you have to have a Ph.D."

No you do not. Here are some Korean professors without Ph.D.s in various departments in two different universities.

Perhaps, the pay difference has something to do with Koreans thinking they are superior.
"According to the Samsung Group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee, to succeed globally, Korea must forgo the thought that Korea and being Korean is superior, and foreign specialists must be treated with respect."

Of course, how many foreign professors can stay a long time in one position.

And remember,
"A professor of engineering said it was common for there to be up to ten co-authors on a paper, most of whom have had nothing to do with it."

But do you have evidence that associate/non-Phd profs make the same as full profs? They sure don't in the West and my wife knew a few in Busan (teaching regular courses) who didn't either...

I was referring to the lawyer making only $4000 per month. I am sure that when you include the price of our apartments, some of us make more than that. (not necessarily me, but I know some do)

How are these figures calculated? If they are from income tax records, keep in mind that many doctors and lawyers who are self-employed or employed in partnerships may intentionally under-report their income.

Cthulhu,

Do you have any salary scales for Korean universities? Each Korean university provides information on salary scales, right? Don't they also show salary scales on their human resources websites.
