Every country has a national food, dance, etc. But what is America's national dance? Square dancing? I can't think of any other country that has that...

There isn't one. The US is a melting pot, and if you want to say we have a national anything anymore it is the thing of the moment. What ever has bubbled to the surface for the most people at one time. It leads to things like Senators and Presidents doing the Macarena, which is awful, but seems to be the way things are.
Other than that I suppose 'The Chicken Dance.' Regardless of your political or religious affiliations this dance is performed at any number of social gatherings. I've seen it done at Bar Mitzvah's, Persian weddings, school dances from the deep south to Maine and Portland, etc. |

That would be really awful if that became our national dance! |

Don't forget Rock 'n' Roll. Despite a huge contribution from the Brits and various other European countries, Rock 'n' Roll all started in the basements and garages of Californians back in the late 50's and early 60's.
There's also some pretty good old-fashioned country and western music that is purely American. |

The Blues had a baby and they called it rock 'n' roll.
Blues, Jazz and rock 'n' roll were all invented in America. That's your national music. And you should be very proud that your country came up with such wonderful things.
Of course, some would argue that it was only a certain minority in America who gave birth to said wonderful music.
If you're talking about the music of white European America, then that would originally be the Scots-Irish style folk which developed into bluegrass and then country and western. |

One beautiful thing about America is that it doesn't have a singular national music. Skynnard isn't very Boston. Eminem isn't very Alabama. The Beach Boys aren't very Alaska. Most people don't give a flying fluck about jazz, hip-hop is a complete mystery to basically everybody over the age of 40, Elvis is a bloated dead olive loaf of a junkie fruitcake...
I dunno...I go "Woody Guthrie," I suppose, if I had to pick one, but again it's pretty generational.
As for national dance...might i suggest the Stiff-armed Warbly Douche? I'm sure Ireland will be happy to be rid of them.
Just as we Canadians are well pleased to have shat out our Bryan Adamses and Celine Dions on you, the other countries of the world have many blessings to bestow. |

| Where in America? In Brazil the dancing is a lot different then it is in parts of Canada... It all depends on where in America you are. |

Is that so? I think you too casually naturalize nationalism and nationalist myths. Nationalists create them and then project them backward in time, claiming primordial reality.
In any case, "the United States" represents a multiethnic, multicultural society. Like Canada, Australia, and South Africa, it emerged and developed from "a settler colony" that Western European, mainly British, traditions shaped and formed.
Other traditions also shaped it, especially several African traditions. Take music, for example. Jazz, a distinctly American phenomenon. As others mention above, rock 'n roll emerged from this, too. |
