attendance? I'm not a student!
(we're teachers and all but really...)
I didn't miss any days of work my first three years of work at my first hagwon here, then after a serious accident damaged my ankle and knees and chest I as a result of that missed three (3) days over the course of the first month of my fourth year at the same hagwon, to which the director expressed concerns and insinuated that if it continues they'll have to look for a new teacher, at which point I promptly gave my notice and quit, moving on to my present hagwon of over two years, having missed one day of work here. |

| Used 1/2 day when I was puking my guts up in a classroom and then the director let me use the other 2 1/2 days when I went on emergency leave for my mother. I had 3 days in my hagwon contract and used them, but she fucked me on taxes in the end by not paying NTS my taxes and the last 2 months of pension. I am looking to further seek action when I return in country. I would had got screwed anyhow, but I know I didn't get screwed as bad as she wanted to screw me as I stood up for myself. Won pinching 2 faced bitch... |

Ok, these repeated testimonies about 1 day in 10 years or whatever are boring.
Where are the people who call in to go to Everland or something like that? That's what we want to hear. |

| You should have perfect attendance. That's the custom. I used to know people in the west who used to do shift work and would phone in sick to attend a party, concert. Really bad behavour |

Korean bosses' screwing people over is the custom, too.
Spitting (hello, have these people never heard of TB) is a custom. Using hookers is a custom. Respecting someone for no good reason other than they're one day older than you is custom. Teaching kids to piss on the street is custom.
Some customs are junk. |

How did you guys manage not to get sick the first few days in country?
Adjusting to new weather generally causes people to get sick, even it's just a mild cold. How did you manage to avoid that? Better yet doesn't the school require you to stay home if you're sick so you wont get the children sick? |
I got incredibly sick my first few days in country. I didn't start work for over a week though, so I didn't have to take any sick days. |

This one made me laugh. This is Korea. You are expected to work unless on your deathbed. If you told your boss "I have the sniffles and don't want to get the kids sick" he would just hand you a surgical mask and tell you to wear it like everyone else here does to prevent spreading illness when they're sick. Besides, even if you got the kids sick, they would still come to school.
As for getting sick due to being in a different country, I got sick several times during the first few months here. Nothing serious though so I just toughed it out. |

| 9 months...7 sick days plus late for work once. How sad I know. If I go into work sick, I act stupid however. So it is better for all parties that I avoid them when I'm sick. |

Last year I had 1 day sick. I wasn't actually sick, I had spent the weekend with the missus and was knackered. Another day I took sick because my pregnany wife had to have some emergency tests done on out unborn child, but this was during seat-warming time at winter vacation.
This year I was sick. Yellow dust brought on a serious asthma attack on Sunday (no hospital ooen nearby and I don't usually get asthma) and by monday I couldn't stand up. My school went ape when I came to work on Tuesday. The following Monday I did the same again, just to teach them that I won't be intimidated, and I started looking for a new job shortly after. |

Last month, I took my first sick day in 7 years, and the one seven years ago was my first one in 5 years. So two call-in-sick days in 12 years. In Canada, I've never called in sick for work (called in "sick" for school PLENTY).
(I don't count my emergency appendectomy last year as sick days...even then it was during the winter intersession; I missed three classes). |
