So after waiting weeks for GTA4 to arrive and having played about 10 hours of it, my PS3 has broken Crying or Very sad

I think its the pretty common Bluray drive failure since it will not recognise any disc I insert, be it a game, DVD or Bluray. It's still under warranty although unfortunatly I have lost the receipt. I can remember the stall I got it from in Yongsan but I'm assuming the guy will not simply replace it without a receipt.

So basically what are my options? Does anyone know the telephone number for Sony Korea that would deal with a hardware fault, assuming that is where I am going to be redirected. I don't live in Seoul so it's not like I can just take a short subway journey to Yongsan.

Any thoughts appreciated.

A light punch to the top of the machine should straighten the laser out. Always works for me with my DVD player.

Just kidding.

There is a Playstation service center in Bangbae-dong, Seocho-gu in Seoul (I assume there are many others as well). The exact same thing happened to my PS3 a couple of months ago. I took it there, with no receipt, and they fixed it for free. They can tell by the serial number if you have a warranty. The repair only took about 20 minutes or a half hour. If you have a free day to make it to Seoul, I can give you directions. Unfortunately, I do not know the phone number.

My PS3 box had a name of store and other information where you were supposed to write-in the date of purchase. Somehow, this acts as your warranty.

What size model do you have, and how old was it?

Hmm I'll take a look at the box. It's the 40GB version and I got it on launch day, whenever that was. Certainly less than a year ago.

Ok, here is how to get to the Sony Service center in Bangbae-dong. Go to Naebang Station on line 7. Take exit 5. Walk straight out and up the (gentle) hill until you get to the first intersection with a stop light. Its a five minute walk or less. There is a large, round building on the corner on your right. The service center is the second floor of that building.
You may want to search around for a more convenient place to go, but I can guarantee you that this one is there and they work fast. I noticed it when I first moved here two years ago, and was lucky enough to be able to walk two blocks with my broken PS3 and have it fixed, for no charge, in under half an hour. Assuming you have the same problem as I did (disks won't read, or even spin in the drive), you should have no problems.
Let me know if you need more help finding the place.

I bet they'd fix it for money (not necessarily warranty). Anything is possible.

I had this same problem with my PS3, an American 60GB model. The service center in Bangbae-dong would not repair my machine because it wasn't a Korean model. The staff was courteous though, and the tech I talked to spoke decent English and recommended I go to Yongsan, which I did.

I was a little frustrated, but I understand that as an official Sony shop they'd likely be required to file a report for each machine they work on, etc. I hope electronics firms start offering service for out of country/region products given that things are much more universally compatible (ie an American PS3 can run any game on pretty much any power source) compared to a decade or so ago.

Anyways, if you take your PS3 to the main game alley at Terminal Mall (터미널상가, iirc) you can get the lens replaced quickly. It was a bit costly though (110k, with 3 month warranty on the repair) but I didn't really have the time or inclination to shop around, so I'd bet you might be able to get it done for a little cheaper if you search a bit.
