www.yolango.com is a site I helped get up and running through consultation and support for the design and functioning. Some late evenings given the time difference with the States. It encompasses my belief in text/audio support for English language learners.
It is a very very alpha animal. So please let me know here what you think. A basic test for a much more social site later this year.

Site looks great. I can see a lot of Koreans using it, maybe even in lieu of private lessons. It's kind of like watching a captioned movie that is wired into Yahoo's dictionary. The scoring function might keep them coming back.
I would hope that a site like this would get rid of the need for these horrible, excuse-for-a-class 'Screen English' deals. All the Korean teachers do is translate, have them do fill in the blanks, and then explain some idiomatic expressions (that they probably just learned from a fellow native teacher a minute before class!).
My only suggestion would be to replace the phycho looking 40ish balding dude with an attractive 20ish female in the introduction section. Petty, I know, but if you're taking this further as a business, why not cover every angle. |

The bald guy is going even though he's the big cheese! He admits as much. Also as per my idea, each video will have a brief intro by someone. A face instead of boring script. Vocab is going too, too confusing.
But by the fall with the real site, a lot more user generated content based on themes..... Users will also be able to make their own videos, I hope.
Thanks for the feedback. Playlist also will be coming and I have told them is a must! The scoring function I'd like to refine but this was a must when I first set out to make something more "learner" friendly than just watch and talk....
More comments appreciated. I am getting the site also to set in motion full screen optioning. In this day and age this is possible and would make this not only a self directed site.

How'd you get around the copyright issues?
Various ways. I can't go into all the details without revealing too much but everything is copyright okay. Vast access to a huge database of videos provided by many media outlets. More being added. The person who started the site has worked at the higher end of the entertainment industry and also with sound (Audible / Sony and others). But many of the videos (like the Travel postcards etc....are in the public domain or can be used "in part" legally.

Looks like a great site. Thanks for coming up with such a great idea. I am recommending it to my students.
I just wish my school would allow me to use stuff like this in the classroom.
Anyway, Great work.
cheers. |
