I've never been to one, so some of you who have, may feel obligated at this point to tell me that until I do go, I can't comment on them. (To this I say: even though I've never had an STD, I nevertheless feel fully within my rights to question the pleasantness of the experience).

Admittedly, the main thing that prevents me from attending an ESL get together is the inconvenience. Seoul is a long way to travel; I would have a husband and baby in tow, and from what I've read, these things are not exactly family oriented. Which is fine; that's as it should be, since the majority of us are singles--but, it just makes it that much less likely that I can join in.

That said, a huge factor in my distaste for get togethers is the recent trend that has arisen of shoving your camera in someone's face and then plastering the pics all over the internet--one can assume in at least some cases without the knowledge or consent of the people in the picture.

Also recently (again from an outsider's perspective, mind you) it would seem that a lot of negative experiences have come out of or been directly related to these gatherings. I could give examples, but I'm sure you can think of your own.

All of which begs the question: Are these get-togethers really a positive, harmless, fun-filled way of getting to know people from the boards, or are they potentially hurtful, essentially superficial (hi I'm so and so, nice to talk to you, ok next) situations from whence a lot of misunderstanding and miscommunication can arise? I'm not answering my own question, as I don't know the answer.

Talk amongst yourselves.

If you're camera shy don't go. I don't see what the big deal with having your pic on the net is anyway. Are you in some kind of witness protection program? Are you paranoid that you will attract stalkers?

I have never attended becuase I've always had other plans or somthing has come up. If I am ever free and bored while one is going on maybe I'll join. It's not that high on my list of things to do however.

The reason I first went to a get together was because I was new in korea, hardly new anyone and was stuck at a school with people who couldn't speak english. So I went along, and made a few contacts out of it. For an isloated newbie, that gathering probably contributed to me be able to hack it in korea.

As for the photo thing, part of me gets jittery. But to be honest I've had videos and photos of me doing stupid things plastered in far more public forums than daves. I do think that people should probably ask permission before posting your pic (that clearly identifies you) up, just as a matter of politness more than anything.

As for the family friendly ones, we tried to organise a picnic but it kind of died. Maybe we could try again when things get warmer.

defo. if someone is going to post your picture on dave's they should ask permission and let a mod know that they have asked permission too or a mod should delete the foto.

Wasnt one of the people in the last set of pics ATTACKED over his appearance? Shocked Like thats necessary.

Also didnt he alter his sig to state that he emphatically did not consent to having his picture posted?

In this case the picture should have been removed immediately, if not by the OP then by one of the mods. There was no excuse for what happened.

Edit: E-4 can you explain what you wish to convey with your "Location" line? Specifically can you let me know what the language silly rabbit, d1cks are for chicks is supposed to mean? Are you a homophobe? Or is there some other meaning here?
Or possibly just a way to show how the filter can be circumvented?
Now I know that I can write ANYTHING in my location line I'm going to change my "Location" line to "*beep* off cocksuckers"!

No. It will remain there until a mod asks me (nicely, or not so nicely--I'll update you) to remove it.

As for the pic thing, I wasn't really referring to/accusing anyone in particular, except that I have seen the pictures of a LOT of posters here now, some in varying states of inebriation, etc., usually posted on people's personal websites and linked here. Now if you don't have a problem with this, fine; I'm just saying I would highly resent having flashbulbs going off in my face, not knowing who was taking my picture or what they planned to do with it, where they planned to post it, etc. Need we be reminded that the cretins at koreanesl avidly follow everything we eslcafers do?

Not necessarily.. others can comment more.. but I notice a number of married people who do attend.. generally, I notice that an early crowd kind of gathers earlier who tend to be more earlier-minded.. (married, want to get home before it gets late, with their boyfriend/girlfriend), etc.

Later if you hang around well past midnight and into the wee hours of the morning.. then you have more of the singles kinds of people without a girl or guy to go home to who happily and merrily drink away the entire night.

So, there are actually BOTH kinds.

If thats a concern, I don't really know the solution to that one. I suppose you could politely say 'please I don't want to be in any photos' if you see one. (Sit in a corner facing the wall might help as well).. try to go home before 11pm or so when people might be more adamant to take pictures or something like that.. hard one to answer.

Hmm.. negative experiences coming out directly related to the gatherings.. I can only think of one boyfriend/girlfriend situation.. but from my understanding that is a personal matter has no real reflection of random posters meeting and such. Generally, if you are thinking of online arguments, they generally die away quickly when meeting people person-to-person.

I'd say positive, harmless, and fun-filled way of getting to know people from the boards.

Potentially hurtful? I haven't experienced anything like that nor heard of others who have.

Essentially superficial? Yes, they can be as there are numbers upon numbers of people and you will not get much time to get into much too much depth if you are social and trying to find out who such-and-such is. But at any point you can just sit down and grab a chair and refuse to move from it. This will put you into a longer-term conversation for more in-depth one-on-one time if you so desire. Either option is up to you.

I must admit that I can understand Corporal's point.

I, personally, did not want my photo on the internet and it was posted.

I am uncomfortable with my hideous visage.

However, I asked the poster to remove it and they did.

So, I see the point as a bit, well, pointless.

I have not seen anyone being photographed against their will, so, I don't really understand the problem of photos.

I assure Corporal that their is no papazazii. (sp?)

So long as the photographer get permission to post the photo in question before posting it from the photographed when they are capible of making an informed decission there really is no problem.
