NOT as bad as people are making out. Better than Crusade. Quite far-fetched, even for Indy standards, but a more worthy farewell than Crusade.

By the way, did anyone else catch the Korean writing on the wall in the sanitorium?

I thought it was good. However, I found it weaker than the first three by a fair margin.

Pretty lame.

SEMI SPOILER*******************************************

It wouldn't surprise me if Spielberg has a shrine dedicated to aliens somewhere in his mansion. Close Encounters, E.T., A.I., this one. (not too mention War of the Worlds) Sorry. I'm just not digging the whole 'Indiana Jones and the Flying Saucer' bs.

Not as bad as Lucas when he revisited his big trilogy though. <shudder>
At least that's something.

The movie does make me think of a 'cougar' though. Trying really hard to look younger and more attractive than she really is.
Not Ford mind you, but the film itself. Ford's like John Wayne man. Age doesn't take anything away from him.

In the future I'd like to see a fresh take on Indiana Jones. Why not turn it into a James Bond type deal. You know? New director, new actor?

It was a fun movie, but come on -

surviving a nuclear blast in a lead lined refrigerator?

the greaser kid swinging through the jungle like tarzan?

interdimensional aliens?

yeah the aliens got to be too much but hey they were archeologists. the greaser swinging through the trees was a little bit too much as well. also during that jeep scene went on way tooo long. Ant scene was great and also guys getting thrown out of vehicles is classic Indiana Jones.

They almost did a pass the torch err hat thing at the wedding where the greaser started to pick it up but Indy grabbed it. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to milk the franchise for one more and completely screw it up with the kid has Henry Jones III.

postfundie and SuperHero nailed it. This was a disappointment, to say the least. I didn't have a problem with the supernatural aspects, so many of those are expected and make the story interesting. My main complaints were with the action scenes. I'll break down some of my major complaints below:

******SPOILER ALERT!********

In all of the other Indiana Jones movies, the action sequences were far-fetched, but somewhat in the realm of possibility. In this episode, it started for me when he cut open the shotgun shells and the buckshot pellets were attracted to the magnetic box--buckshot are made from lead, not steel. Then, the nuclear blast refrigerator that was flung several hundred meters but the door didn't pop open until Indy emerged unscathed on the ground. In the jungle chase/fight scene, why did the Russians have that tree-cutting/road-making machine out front in the first place? After it was blown up and disabled, the jeeps and trucks kept driving for quite a few more kilometers, seemingly on a two-lane road at times! What about the ride over the waterfalls? I could have bought it if they had tried to sell it a little harder...it just seemed like they had all fallen out of a rowboat on a pond and climbed back in. I could go on and I'm sure there are other things I've forgotten to mention (Tarzan vine-swinging moving faster than racing jeeps!!!).

I'm sure I could go back to other Indiana Jones movies and find scenes that were totally unbelievable, but this one was full of them. Again, I expect to see some things that are unlikely and even unbelievable...it's a movie after all. However, this one didn't come close to measuring up to the previous three Indy movies, IMO.

Me too at times. Once I almost left the theatre. Sure I'd had too much coffee. It was when they had just escaped the Russian camp, it was night, and they'd stumbled into a quicksand pit. I felt particularly sleepy when Indiana and his ex were talking (blablablabla) and I kept wondering WTF, why do I have to listen to this? He says, 'every woman I met after you had the same problem, she wasn't YOU'. But his ex looks like a pumpkin and yakity yakity yak there wasn't one thing sexy about her, even when she shut up. Face like an ironing board.

One thing I found really WEIRD about the movie was all the stuff about aliens. Is Steven Spielberg trying to tell us something? Get ready aliens are coming, what?

But back to feeling sleepy. The movie had deadly doldrum moments which were actually Sat aft relaxing when I realized there are, interspersed, these fantastic Spielberg SPECIAL EFFECTS bits. Which are more than worth the time and price of admission. Those un-special effected moments, however, were fit for the generation that watched the original Indiana Jones, same pace, snoring guy next to you.

On the other hand it's kinda nice they developed the characters by BORING us to death with them, at times. Some modern thriller/adventure type movies (eg. Jumper, Transformers)are slickly without any character whatsoever as if humanity is a waste. Just play tiddlywinks with your eyes and blow into your ears leaving you feeling cheap and violated.

havent seen it, but I do remember hearing all about it the past 10 years people always asking lucus when is the next indie etc.. he would always say when the right script comes along.
Ford and spielberg said the same things in their interviews over the past 10 years.. when the right script comes we would jump in ! but so far nothing decent has turned up, the scripts we have seen for 4 were not to standard!
this is the best they could come up with????
everyone is saying its crap!! DAMN!!!
sad thing is you know its not a money driven movie! because those guys are loaded! they did it for the love of the character.. guess they loved the script..

For the people who say they loved it, i wonder if they saw the same movie i did. I think i could have suspended my disbelief through much of the movie if not for some jarringly god-awful special effects. Shia being Tarzan? WTF! Monkey-ewoks? Gimme a break. Surviving the waterfalls? Good grief. An archaeologist so wantonly destroying artifacts? Yowzers (although this is probably more my age/experience/knowledge showing than anything else). The nuclear blast?

There were parts of it that were definitely enjoyable, but i guess this is kind of a warning sign that i'm getting older and that you can't really go back to that point in time again when Indy was your hero and the stunts were amazing instead ridiculous or unbelievable.

In any case, ILM could have done MUCH better with the effects in the jungle scenes. OR, after rendering it, they should have realized that if you can't make it look good, don't put it in there. Iron Man's effects were much better than in Indy 4. One would think that this being Lucas' and Spielberg's baby, ILM would have done their absolute best. I suspect that perhaps the difference is Favreau's idea of what CGI should be/do vs. Lucas'/Spielberg's vision of CGI with Lucas sharing more of the blame in this regard than Spielberg. To me, the stuff in Last Crusade, Temple of Doom and Raiders of the Lost Ark looked much better than what a lot of the stuff i saw in Indy 4. I guess that's my biggest gripe with Indy 4--the fx.

However, the good was definitely Harrison Ford--it's great seeing him in the role again and actually see him acting and having fun on screen. He's been rather lifeless recently and it's good to see he's still got it.

And one final thing--Communists as bad guys in the Indy series are not nearly as good as the Nazis.

It's a movie for Chrissake. Not only that, it's a family-ish Hollywood blockbuster made by Spielberg and Lucas in the next millenium.

It was definitely full of some cheesiness, but decent enough to enjoy with the understanding that there probably won't be anymore with Harrison Ford.

horrible movie!!! spot on about the unrealistic scenes. i can take one, two, or three possible 'no way that could happen' but it seemed to be every two seconds in this film. it was completely trite and repetitive....indiana is in a predicament...gonna die...escapes...commies follow him...catch up....indiana is in a predicament... gonna die...

big disappointment!!!
