Don't know if this has been covered, but here goes . . .
Two weeks ago I went to try and get my Korean Driver's License. I was told by my co-workers that it would be easy and painless, and that I should get it that day. I was skeptical, but I went in their with a positive attitude. Well I was told to come back in another week(on a Wed.) to take a written test. So much for being positive. Yesterday my office mate told me he went to the same location(Yesan), and that all he had to do was take an eye test. Flash forward to today. I go back to Yesan with my girlfriend to find out what's going on. Sure enough, they tell me that I have to take the written test. When I get my girlfriend to explain to them about my co-worker, they ask if he was Canadian(in fact he's British). Apparently only Americans have to take the written test, Canadians and Brits are exempt. So, is that fair-or a load of horse s--t? |

Nope, here is the reason:
America no longer accepts drivers licenses from Korea when they want to drive over there. They have to either have a valid international license or go through ALL steps to get an American one.
With Canada/Britian we accept their licenses no questions asked, and so Korea does the same for us. |

I thought it was just the Korean govt.'s way of sticking it to Americans, but I can understand now, thanks. |

The test can't be that difficult considering all the unbelievibly bad drivers on the roads here. Do they have an English version of the written test? |

As I said the American gov't just started this in 2003, so Korea just started in 2003. |

There is no federal regulation of driver's licenses in the U.S. Each state's version of a department of motor vehicles sets regulations regarding the issuance of licenses. That's why we have California driver's licenses, Nevada driver's licenses and so on, but no national driver's license. |

Has anyone ever taken the Korean test in English? Is there a book to study from like you get at the DMV in the States? Has anyone from the US ever gotten a Canadian licence? Which process would be easier, taking the Korean test in English or getting a Canadian license? |
