HI. I' ve been teaching in Korea for two months. My contract is for one year from Oct 2003- Oct 2004. My E-2 visa says that it expires in Dec. 2003 -later this month! - , but my alien registration card says that I can be here until Oct. 2004. I want to know if this is normal. So far the other visas I've seen are for the entire contract period. My boss said that that's how they do it at Immigration here, and that it's not neccessary to renew the visa. Everything else my boss has said has been the case. I have a really good set up and don't want to lose it!

I'm curious about the visa thing though because this sounds a little weird and I obviously don't want to be teaching here illegally. If anyone out there knows about this- please reply. What would my school or immigration have to gain by giving me a visa that is good for only 2 months!? Something else that has made me especially curious about this is that my school seems to be in slight financial difficulties as enrollment is down and some Korean teachers are leaving and are not being replaced. Thanks for your input!

I think (not entirely sure) that you might be looking at the 'activation' date of the E-2 visa...
Did you get the E-2 issued before you came to Korea? I did, and there was a 3-month period in which I had to enter Korea before the E-2 became invalid. I'd assume you processed your E-2 around September/October time, so that 3 month period would finish in December.
Once you enter Korea, everything's fine.

Like I said, not entirely sure, but it sounds plausible.

It clearly says, "Status: E-2" "Period of Sojourn: 01Y" "Entries: S" "Issuing Date: 2003/ 09/ 24" "Expiry Date: 2003/ 12/ 28."

I know that when you apply for the visa from outside Korea- and receive it, you have three months to apply for the alien registration card. Does this card kind of replace the need for the visa to stay valid for your whole contract period? If so, why are others teacher's visas valid for a whole year and mine for only 3 months?

There's your 1 year right there.

I'm almost sure the "expiry date" must be the time in which it needs to be activated by. You have 3 months in which to enter Korea before the E-2 expires, and then you have 3 months in which to register yourself here and get the alien card.

No worries. If your ARC is up-to-date, so are your records. Date in your passport isnt important.
