Just wondering if it's a nation-wide thing.

Mine is doing earthquake drill right now. So if there is an earthquake, I am supposed to go to my office and use the Internet.

How exactly are Koreans preparing for an earthquake? How can one possibly prepare?

Laughing Same here. Everyone's hiding under their desks & I'm drinking coffee & surfing the net. The last laugh will definitely be on them if there's an earthquake mind you.

On this subject, is Korea prone to, or does it have a history of, earthquakes? I've heard about earthquakes in both China & Japan, but never Korea.

They're not running here, they're hiding under their desks. Don't know how much that will help if the building collapses though.

Well, I would be doubtful as to whether Korean schools are better constructed than Chinese schools. Me, I'd run.

they have some minor tremors once in a while, but nothing too catastrophic...or at least nothing in recent years. btw: hiding under the desk is pretty much the only option you have if quake strikes while in the classroom, so it's better than nothing!

but i'm happy to have the free time!!

It took my class about 3 minutes before everyone was finally under a desk. As much of a joke as they think it might be, it does actually prepare them in case there is one. I remember being in a 6.8 earthquake in Seattle back in 2001 while in an accounting class. My TA said "Who's moving the floor?"

It is interesting watching my high school students enjoy the time like it was a carnival activity. they really have no clue what they should do in case of a real emergency. I suspect that our high school would collapse around them, and they would be buried in the rubble before they knew what hit them.

You can scroll around and view earthquakes from all over the world.

Oh Mr.Lee

Lee instructs Cabinet to take anti-earthquake measures

Quote:
"We should reexamine our disaster prevention systems to minimize casualties in case of an emergency. In particular, extra attention has to be given to old school buildings built before the government's strict earthquake-resistant design rules were enforced in July 2005," said the president.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Peninsula#Geology
Quote:
The terrain of the Korean Peninsula is rumpled, covered with low mountains. Most rocks are of Precambrian origin, although isolated pockets of Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic rock can also be found.

There are no active volcanoes on the peninsula. However, Baekdu Mountain in the north and Hallasan in the south have crater lakes, indicating that they were active not long ago. Furthermore, hot springs indicative of low-level volcanic activity are widespread throughout the peninsula. Roughly two earthquakes are recorded per year, but few have any major impact.

I think bears are far more of a threat than earthquakes.
