Everyone must have it in for you, Austin.

I've been to lots of the get togethers, and while yes- a nasty thing or two has happened to posters at get togethers, I'd hardly say the get togethers were the cause of the problem. The worst thing that happens to most people is a mild hangover or sleep deprivation. Razz

Best case scenario: I've made a bunch of friends through the board- some I met at the get togethers, others I didn't. It can be a very good support network for someone who's new and lonely here, and I know of at least one couple who met at a get together and seem very happy.

About the photos- simply tell the overzealous photographer that you don't want your picture taken/ posted online. It's realy not all that difficult to avoid- if you want to.

As for the real question:

Are these get-togethers really a positive, harmless, fun-filled way of getting to know people from the boards, or are they potentially hurtful, essentially superficial (hi I'm so and so, nice to talk to you, ok next) situations from whence a lot of misunderstanding and miscommunication can arise?

Isn't there the potential for either outcome anytime you meet new people? Most of the people I've met are slightly ashamed of their alter ego/ board geek personas, and it's nice to see what's behind the avatar- in some cases it's been a bit of a surprise. ( and I'm still NOT Seoultrader!)

I've never been to a get-together, but I would have no problem if anyone felt the urge to display this handsome mug:

The get-together idea seeped into one of my dreams recently.
Towards the end of one of my dreams I was suddenly with people from the board and we were all losing our keys. Each time someone would pick up another's keys they would drop their own keys and then someone else would pick up those keys, and then drop their keys.........on and on.
There weren't any names of people from this board in the dream but i still knew that they were people from this board.
At the very end of the dream I announced to a couple of guys that I was hardyandtiny and then I went back inside a huge mansion and got a Boddington's pint can out of the fridge. That's when I woke up! And all I could think of for the first hour of my day was that Boddington's beer can.
I remember now stretching in the shower and thinking it was a beautiful design Boddington's had come up with.
I haven't actually been to a real get-together yet but I will soon.
I think it's a good idea, and maybe people should first ask if others mind having their picture taken.
I don't mind but I understand.
