Just had a drill in Suncheon. It was an earthquake drill. The original plan was to have them all go outside but *slaps forehead* they decided there was not enough time so instead they just hid under their desks.

Our students are just running around in the hallways. I think they misunderstood. They are trying to cause an earthquake.

happening at my school right now.

i have no fucking idea what it's all about, except it's mildly amusing and I guess I'll only have to teach half of 6th period or less.

They're in the courtyard organized by homerooms? and sitting on the sand.

Oh is that the reason. I wondered why it was going off. I asked my co teacher but he said he didn't know.

Smile

Just glad it wasn't advance notice of the NK commando units storming ashore.

That was extremely loud, no one told me either. Apparently there was notice put up in English though. Notice of the Earthquake Drill

I wish I didn't have to teach sixth period. Maybe i'll get lucky. =D
Nope. *sigh*

Why on the 27th?

How do you know the difference between an air raid drill and an earthquake drill? I guess by the absence of fighter jets overhead?

There's a shelter in the basement of my building, but of course we ignored it as usual.

i dont understand an 'earthquake drill'. i wasnt aware you could predict these things. surely by the time that the alarm has gone off the earthquake has hit and everything s flattened.

i may be wrong, any seismologists out there??

drill = practice. When you hear the siren, you do what you should do in an earthquake. Hide under your desk?

I'm not a seismologist - and I haven't ever been in any earthquakes. However,

I know some people who swear by this earthquake detector that detects the "P wave" giving you time to react to an earthquake before the actual shaking starts. Although I don't know how effective it would be for an earthquake of any serious magnitude. I'm sure it would detect it - but I don't know if a few seconds would really be helpful.

I have no idea if the government of Korea is using these types of devices to detect earthquakes, or how todays drill was meant to help earthquake preparedness. (My students all stood outside right next to the building, but it took them 10 minutes to get out).

From what I do know about what to do in an earthquake, it didn't seem like that was being implemented. I was pretty confused by the whole thing. [/url]

I really wish they spent time teaching traffic safety rather than protesting cows or hiding under desks from falling apartments. Kids jump in front of cars all the time, and citizens of all ages just meander across the road as if there aren't two buses charging right at them. People are far more likely to die in or from a car than from an earthquake or a cow. One of my colleagues was going on and on about Mad Cow Disease and the latest Seoul protest, and about how it's important to get students involved, so I asked him why teachers and students weren't concerned about other students being killed in traffic accidents (7 students from 2 schools in my town have died in the past 12 months on bus accidents on field trips). She said the situations weren't comparable because traffic accidents are daily life, but American beef is from the government. Rolling Eyes Remarkable.

I was in Seoul today getting my CBC's declaration notarized at the embassy, and I didn't realize there was an air raid drill going on at all. I must have been on the subway when the first siren went, and I thought it was just a construction problem at the Kyobo intersection logjamming all the cars there.

It was funny. The people got tired of baking in the sun on the corners and everyone started crossing at once. The policemen there started tooting on their whistles, waving their arms telling people to stop. Yeah right. Go ahead and arrest all 2-300 of them.

A minute later, the second siren went off. Ah-ha, THAT's why no one was moving.

I've been in this country for six months and i've yet to hear any of these air raid sirens or earthquake warnings. Is Suwon immune from attack by the North and earthquakes?
