i'm pretty sure that when you sign on for a second year at a hagwon, you get the severance pay at the end of your first year.
Is that right or am I mistaken?
thanks in advance |

you should. some owners will try to pay it in installments and some will to weasel their way from paying it until later.
i finished my contract in march, told my hagwon boss id come back in june and then 2 days before i left, i got my severence. of course though, i had a meeting with them about a week before i left to tell them my plans and what i needed on the business end.
just dont assume anything...always try to communicate with ur boss to tell them what u want and what u feel u deserve. (well at least that worked for me) |

Legally, you can ask for it AND they are required to pay it but it is NOT required to pay it out unless you ask for it.

yeah, i guess it means i shouldn't just take things for granted. i will definitely make that a condition along with a salary increase, and a paid visa run in order for me to consider re-signing.
After all, I am building up their English language materials from stuff on the internet and CD-ROMS of the curriculum they bought. That goes over and beyond what a standard hagwon job requires.
Thanks again fellas for the responses. |

ummm... if you are re-signing (extending at the same employer) you do NOT need to make a visa run.
You only need:
1. Visa Extension Application
2. Passport and your Alien Registration Card
3. New contract
4. Sponsorship Certificate (from school)
5. A copy of Certificate of School / Business Registration (from school)
6. Processing Fee (30k won for the visa and 50k for your re-entry permit (including Americans - multi entry does NOT continue into an extension).
7. New Criminal Record Certificate, (embassy notarized if you are IN Korea )
8. New Health Check Certificate
