Hi all.
I am thinking about my options for the end of the year after my contract is up.
I like the idea of working at a PS based on what I've read on here about the longer vacations and fewer teaching hours than a hagwon.
What I don't like is that the pay scale for someone with my credentials and experiece at a PS is less than what I earn at the hagwon I'm at now.
Is overtime almost always available at a PS (in the Seoul area), or how does it work? |

The PS system that I applied with stated that you can work OT at any school within that system; not just your FT school. I would assume that OT would be readily available based on that alone. You take the the good with the bad on the pay scale , I guess (more vacation, prep periods, less classes, etc...). What scale are you in with a PS that is so bad based on your credentials? |

Dimitri31, that is probably on the lower side believe me. If you have at least 1 year experience in Korea working at a hagwon then you will be at least 2.2 or 2.3 regardless of what any scale says. That should be for 22 hours of class time which amounts to 40 minutes of teaching per hour. That is better than having to do a full 1 hour of teaching at a hagwon. You can do after school programs at most schools in Seoul, Gangnam and for GEPIK. Not sure about EPIK though. You can easily make a few hundred thousand won more a month if you do these after school programs. Remember to ask for this when applying for jobs, just to see if it is offered at the school you are applying for. BoL. |

thanks for the reply Sody. well, i'll have 2 years of hagwon experience after my contract's up at the hagwon i'm at now. I just quickly glanced over the pay scale for GEPIK and SMOE and saw that experience counts for something from "accredited" schools.
hell, now that you mention that hagwon experience does count toward a higher salary with the PS system, shoot it doesn't hurt at all to negotiate pay with the people who hire for public schools.
i thought it was all cut and dry really...like ok, you have this, this, and this, so you will make this. you know, kind of like a formula.
man, things really are different out here than what i'm used to. |

It is like that if you go through one of the programs. I've never heard of anyone working through EPIK, GEPIK, or SMOE managing to negotiate a higher salary. (Speak up if you're reading this and you did it!) Not all public schools are under those three though. |

I am with GEPIK and I was able to negotiate a higher salary. I dealt directly with the school (through my recruiter) and didn't send my application to GEPIK. However, everything else is GEPIK, from contract to workshops and curriculum. |

This is what I did as well. Exactly the same, I negotiated about 100,000W more a month and insisted they put an air conditioner as part of the furnishings in the contract. |

SMOE pay scale is set. Unless you are very highly qualified, you won't negotiate anything more, even the highly qualified have a hard time getting it.
You can do after school classes or overtime during work hours depending on your school. They might offer it, they might not. You can do it at other schools, too, but your principal has to approve it. |
