I hope Andrei Lankov is not a professor in the English Department. His writing is atrocious. He doesn't even substantiate his "anecdotal evidence".
Confused

I have a feeling A dude named Andrei who is carrying a slavic last name like Lankov might not be a native speaker at all.

He was born in Russia and if I remember correctly spent some time (maybe studied) in NK. He is based out of ANU now. He is one of the most respected historians on North Korea on earth.

His last book is a must read.

Agree or disagree with him, but it is great to see more Russian perspective in Korean media.

The obvious case study on inter racial marriage in the Korean context would be the Sakhalin-Koreans in Russia or the Yanbian-Koreans in China. That is - two diffuse races merging because of historical circumstance and geographic isolation, something that perhaps South Korean population would be adverse to in many circumstances. [/b]

While there continues to be spasms of xenophobia here, there has been a remarkable absence of protests, complaints and fear-mongering about the recent up-surge in mixed marriages in South Korea. There have even been reports of both government and private programs set up to smooth the transition for foreign-born spouses.

And those programs are uniformly of the "You must submit to Korean methods in all things!" variety. There is zero effort by the government to address the bigotry on the part of the local population against the foreigners.

Please let me know if I'm wrong about that. I'd love to be wrong on that. I'd love for there to be some real programs addressing that issue.

You are aware, I assume, that when Hines Ward toured South Korea, the North Korean state media issued a broadside condeming supposed efforts to create a multiracial society in SK, and praising the notions of blood purity that had prevaled down here under the dictatorships. The statement even waxed nostalgic about textbooks which taught the Tangun myth.
