Yeah, I got everything handled, and YEAH, I'll be here for another year. Rolling Eyes

But, I did have an interesting conversation with an Immigration employee. When he checked my paperwork, the apostilled police check caught his eye. I have NO police record and have NEVER had cuffs slapped on me( Wink ) , ahem, by a police officer.

Well, the Immigration employee said to me, "I know this is difficult to find. Congratulations." Then he said something in Korean to the woman who went with me to Immigration. When we were outside, she told me that he said to her that Immigration knows that many formerly legal teachers are now working illegally because of the police check requirement and that Immigration is gathering names and addresses for arrests.

I can't tell any of you what to do. You're all "big boys and girls", but if you were once working legally, and you decided that it's too much of a hassle to do all of the new requiremnets, then maybe you should just leave Korea, or, maybe, get a clue and get a new teaching visa.

They know you are here and they know what you are doing. Wink
Because you were once registered with Immigration as a teacher, they know where to find you. You'll be easy to catch.

If you move and work at a different school, will they be able to find you?

I suppose cell phone and ATM record tracking would work, but I assume a cash-only lifestyle is what many illegal teachers are doing.

I'll have to respectfully disagree. I think it would be fairly easy to return on a student visa, attend 3 or 4 classes a semester and pick up a couple jobs without ever getting caught.

How would immigration ever find this hypothetical student/teacher? True, they know where you study 12 hours a week and might know where you sleep. But, how in the hell will they know what you are doing and where you are doing it when you are not in class?

I need a detailed, apostilized ('notarised' by your embassy if you're a Canuk) statement of what, exactly, this means in order to determine if you have violated any Korean laws. Cool

WARNING - You may be subject to a fine, imprisonment and/or deportation.

As a registered alien under the Immigration Act, you have 14 days to report a change of address. Oherwise, they will send officer Kim and officer Park to your old address to arrest you. Wink

Immigration couldn't catch a cold. Either too lazy or too stupid.

But, evidently, there are plenty of others who think they're getting away with something by not renewing their visas.

Seriously - what do people think they will gain by not renewing their visa?

Sure they can work illegally for a while, but their machine-readable passport will 'flag' them when they try to leave.

What/How was the apostille process? Did you get an online criminal check?

Check my tag, I'm from 2003, I know what these folks are talking about because the same people in immigration that are doing these shady things are the same guys who were doing it fourteen years ago long before this website ever existed. That's how they make their money. They set up some poor guy who thinks he's going to get the boot and they say he has to pay X amount of Won and he'll be deported if he doesn't rat on his friend. Been there and done that bro' you gotta keep your head low.
