The computer costs $500 more in Korea. If someone bought it, took of the price tags, and put it in a different box, marking it as a personal item, would I be able to avoid import duties? It's an Apple computer, and they're considerably more expensive in Korea.

There are no guarantees, slim. In 2006, I got a $400 computer in that my friend messed with for a week or so installing different stuff for me. Then, he sent it as a used computer which it technically was in a way. All the tags were taken out and all. A former co-worker who supposedly worked at an airport in the US didn't and had to pay a lot of money for his computer that costed him way too much money for his salary, in my opinion. There is a good chance you can get a used computer in without the tags and not pay duties. It is hard to say.

The thing is, it's cheaper in the U.S., and Apple in Korea doesn't take foreign credit cards. I'd like to use to AMEX to get the extra one or two warranty (on top of the product's existing warranty) you can get by purchasing big items.

This would be a brand new computer that just began selling less than a month ago.

IF you bring it back (as a foreigner) and it is OUTSIDE the box it would NOT be subject to import tax and duty.

IF you ship it into Korea you will be charged the import duties (up to 20%) and VAT (an additional 10%).

If it's a notebook computer, there is no duty tax. Only the 10% VAT.
