I ate at Dos Tacos in Kangnam yesterday. Had a great chicken and avocado burrito.

As he was bringing our drinks to our table, though, the young waiter with a bandaged hand lost his grip on the tray, dumping two cokes and a sprite all over a poor girl. It was kind of like when someone in the high school cafeteria trips and their food goes flying... a hush fell over the small restaurant as people tried to pretend that they hadn't noticed. She handled it very well, though, better than I might have in that situation, and she managed to be gracious about it as she and her party left the restaurant later, she in a Dos Tacos T-shirt they had given her.

I wouldn't even call some of the above Mexican food--more like KorMex.

Does this place have a name? I keep hearing it referred to, but rather obliquely.

La Casa del Mexicano, I actually just ate there yesterday with my bf who is stationed at Osan. He's half Mexican, and grew up in Mexico City, and while he admits it isn't as good, it's pretty good. And it's definitely the best Mexican food I've had here~ I've tried Pancho's, Taco Chili Chili!, Dos Tacos and one in Hongdae that I don't recall the name of.

Also, I think I remember seeing that Taco Chili Chili opened a new location in Gangnam, is this correct? Anyone been there and know where it's located?

yeah, this cafe in Dumas, Texas, only Mexican restaurant in town.

best Mexican in the Texas Panhandle, period. sorry, can't remember the name but if you are ever driving thru on 287 you can't miss it (assuming it's still there).

You're a ding dong daddy from Dumas? You were a DEMON?!

I'm from Panhandle. Might've played you in football.

Best Burrito
Dos Tacos

Dos tacos blows. Look at that! They put that purple cabbage in their burritos. An outrage, I say!

I wouldn't call any of the food I've eaten here tex-mex. It's something else. It's not even kor-mex because there's no established style. It's just weird sh*t that vaguely looks like mexican food.

Nah I won't be going back.

They looked quite shocked when I told them it was below average.

They asked on leaving what I thought of the meal. Said below average. Pretty tasteless and bland.

I love the burritos in Taco chilli chilli. They're cheap and delicious.

Of course I don't know whether they're authentic or not since I've only ever had authentic Tex-Mex once (In Tex, not Mex) and I was drunk and don't remember what it tasted like. So I'll assume they're not authentic since all you Tex-Mex/Mex connoisseurs seem to be complaining about every single Mexican-ish restaurant in Korea. I've never even had Taco Bell so I know nothing about authenticity.

Even though they may not be 'real' burritos they're damn tasty. The chicken one in particular. I'd be surprised if 'real' tex-mex was more to my liking than that deliciousness.

Oh I've been to On The Border too. That's like Outback but with funny foreign food. I had a burrito there and didn't like it anywhere near as much as Taco Chilli Chilli.. I think that may have partly been to do with the expensive prices and it being the kind of restaurant I detest. (I don't like prepackaged-decor chain restaurants much.)

So Taco Chilli Chilli it is for me.

PS. Is there a competition going on to see who can insult the "Mexican" food in Korea the most going on in this thread? It seems to that each person seems to be trying to one-up the previous with their condemnation of the food served in Korean Tex-Mex restaurants. Is it really that bad? Is the quality of every Tex-Mex restaurnt in North Dakota, Iowa or Nunavet that much better than here??

It's not so bad by itself, but taken as mexican food it's all wrong. It's like listening to bad cover song, or somebody singing slightly off key. If you know what the song should sound like, it quickly becomes infuriating. If you don't, then you think, "oh, this is pretty good."

Also, where the hell are you from?

you got to remember there are a bunch of us from texas and the southwest who were spoiled on good tex-mex, new mex-mex etc and find these places to be a big time letdown. i hate to say this taco cabana is better than any mexican food i've had in korea.

best enchiladas i've had were at some of the hole-in-the-wall places in alpine texas in the mexican part of time. i'm sure in other towns there are similar places. you could a plate of cheese enchiladas and a huge iced tea for like $5

England.

Should I now await a witty remark about British food? Or should I get in ahead and mention how good our curry is first..

Or better yet I shall get super-defensive and explain what the worst things about British food are: (1) Price - it's expensive. But so is everything else in England. (2) Institutional food - Prisons/hospitals/schools etc. have rubbish food, I admit it. (3) Tourist restaurants - these are generally crap and way too expensive. (4) Rubbish pub food - A hell of a lot of pubs have good food nowadays, unfortunately a lot still rely on the microwave.

Outside of the above 4 areas British food is top class =)

Oh, yeah, I forgot about England. Americans tend to think of Mexican food as exotic international cuisine so it confuses us that it's not available worldwide.

As far as British food goes, I've never had it. Is there a place to get it in Korea?

I guess the Irish and British pubs in Itaewon?

I think I had a half decent shepherds pie once in either an Irish or English bar (I get them confused in Itaewan.. but in every other country you're guaranteed it's IRISH).

Korea isn't really the place to go for English food. Modern English cuisine is all about good quality local ingredients cooked in a simple manner. Not gonna happen when you're not in England I guess.. (In this country it'd turn into 'modern Korean cuisine')

i spose for traditional English food any Irish pub will do since we overlap a lot. "irish stew" is pretty Irish, the other stuff on their menu could just as well be from Manchester or Liverpool or Sandwich.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, Sandwiches are traditional English food. I think N. Americans like them. The Earl of Sandwich invented them back in the day. He told me he isn't down with words like 'sub' or 'hoagie' for variations on his sandwich invention. So stop it. Call them a "Classic BMT Sub *Earl of Sandwich*'s sandwich" or an "Allentown Puerto Rican roasted pork hoagie *Earl of Sandwich*'s sandwich".

(PS I believe I'm the first Brit to invoke the "Sandwich" wildcard in a conversation (a question counts..) about British food this year, on this board.)

When "British Curry" doesn't destroy all arguments, we have the "Sandwich" wildcard to fall back on. I think it's a pretty powerful combo.

(I think I'm still being overly defensive about my nation's cuisine, again I apologize)

Funny you should say that because you slackers have no idea what REAL "Mexican" food is. You guys seek Americanized "Tex-Mex" food not authentic Mexican.

I find it ironic you know nothings complain about "KorMex" when you guys eat AmMex and foolishly pass it off as real Mexican. Rolling Eyes

It blows my mind that "Choi's Taco", won best taco. The person who came up with the ratings obviously did not do any research. In my opinion Choi's has the worst tacos of the bunch.

No place better for midnite munchies in the world. NO. Place. Those fresh tortillas coming off the mill 24/7, sold by the sack-full for pennies on the dollar? Holy sh*t!

Nice try, OP, that looks like Tex-Mex slop and this comes from one who lived in the Lone Star State for 12 years.

There is no such thing as real Mexican food in Korea, or China or Japan for that matter--at least I've never seen or read about it yet.

If you ever get to San Antonio, you've got to go to the old Mexican marketplace and Mi Tierra (My Earth), a family-owned business for 70 years. They serve up some of the best green chili chicken enchiladas this side of the border. Just thinking about it makes me drool--more than I usually do.
