I can understand downloading western flicks while in Korea, but it is faster to just pay and get a good quality dvd at the rental place then d!ck around looking for subbed korean flicks on the net.

I live in a small town and their selection of Korean flicks are poor at best.

The "English subtitles" part is the tough part.

The "You no say yes, maybe, why are you lightbulb?" stuff is pretty bad.

It helps to be drunk.

"Why are you lightbulb?" means "Why is it taking you so long to understand the concept here?"

Honest to God, watch D-War. It's a terrible movie but it needs to be seen.

Speaking of D-War I saw a preview for it in a Malaysian cinema. Looked a bit different with extra spectacular CGI scenes.

Anyone heard about a rerelease?

괴물 (The Host) - biggest blockbuster movie in Korea. A pretty good flick.
왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown) - an fun look at a traditional period in Korea, but not really a strong movie.
타짜 (Tazza: The High Rollers) - really cool, stylish Korean film. Really fun.
공동경비구역 JSA (Joint Security Area) - good movie about the DMZ
살인의 추억 (Memories of Murder) One of the best Korean films I have seen, based on a true story
엽기적인 그녀 (My Sassy Girl) - fun romance Korean style.
색즉시공 (Sex is Zero) - American Pie Korea, fun movie about college life
친절한 금자씨 (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) - One of my all time fave Korean films.
올드보이 (Oldboy) If you dont know about this movie.you need to.
말죽거리 잔혹사 (Once Upon a Time in High School) Great taekwondo flick about highschool life back in the day (great Korean homage to Bruce Lee)
장화, 홍련 (A Tale of Two Sisters) - pretty scary horror
마파도 (Mapado) - funny and cute old stoned ajumas who are smitten with a young ganster who is hiding on their remote little island
너는 내 운명 (You Are My Sunshine) - tragic tale based on a real story.
달콤한인생 (A Bittersweet Life) (Dalkomhan insaeng) Another gangster flick..worth seeing.
리턴 Wide Awake creepy movie about a psycho killer
그놈 목소리 - Voice of a Murderer - good film about an MBC news caster whose son was abducted, true story
추격자(Choo-gyuk-ja) The Chaser Great movie about another psycho killer, I heard it was based on another real story, its like Memories of murder on speed. Very thrilling movie. I really like this flick.

Wow, great list. I was going to add "Sex is Zero" but there it is! I wouldn't eat fried eggs for a while after seeing this movie!

I'll try and find the other ones, I already have a few but a couple more won't hurt.

"The Host" can also be found already in 720p, very nice to watch.

I'm not sure about that. I've seen a few pretty weak Japanese films that have made it here. I like Japanese film though....Akira Kurosawa!!!!! They have been making films a lot longer than the Koreans and it often shows. A great many Korean films show their lack of experience (sometimes in the cinematography but usually in the story, Korean films are usually better visually than the story....sometimes they have a real drama over kill). Some of the films listed here show some of the weakness of the Korean film industry, but for the most part I would never say these films were good for Korean films. I think a majority of the films I suggested are simply just good films that show both sophistication of story and directing.

The King and the Clown was a huge hit in Korea, but in my mind it really would not have been a success outside of the country because he story telling is a little weak (it is one of best movies depicting a period in Korea's past though), Olboy...well Oldboy is a fantastic film that should never be rated as good for a Korean film. It is a great film.

Taeguki is an example of a visually spectacular film that did really well in Korea. It is a horrible film that doesn't do justice to the reality of the Korean war. It is a real shame I was hoping to learn something from that film....it was nothing but emotional patriotic drivel.

The film about the Gwangu massacre was another disapointment. It was so patriotic and full on nonsense sentiments despite being visually accurate. It was a real shame, it was a moment that deserved good and honest story telling, not the drivel that was presented to the masses. This is the key flaw in both the film industry and the media here in Korea. Oldboy is a shining light of grit that Korean's actually didn't like as much as foreigners. I hope Koreans start to see the value in this sort of creative, honest and intelligent film making (The acceptance of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance in Korea seems to show the population is quickly changing). I found Oldboy to be far more insightful about Korea than Taeguki.

Koreans rarely screw up personal stories though. They have a real nack for showing real life of average people in the cinema. Koreans really seem to like stories about the average person these days. They just get messed up when nationalistic pride gets in the way. They can be a little superficial, even cheesy when thay try too hard to show how great every thing is, or was. Korean film is at its best when it's real and gritty.

Hi folks,
I had a look online for Korean torrents and found the site avistaz.com which seems to have loads of Asian torrents on it. You need to become a member, which i did. I am now downloading two movies. Now i am faced with another hurdle. What do i need to show the English subtitles from the torrent?

The torrent didn't download with a text file? Sometimes the text are kept separate so the text isn't burned into the movie image. If there is a subtitle text file then the player's not picking it up. Could be a setting or you may need another player.

Go to www.koreanfilm.org for what is likely the most complete resource in English dedicated entirely to Korean film. Everything mentioned here is there, plus more.
