Have you considered that possibly 90% of the world's adult population is either unemployed, or engaged in back-breaking labour for pitiful wages? And here we are, earning FAT salaries (by global standards) for an extremely comfortable job. We are in a very privileged position, and anyone who chooses to complain about their work situation needs to look beyond themselves, and start appreciating what they have. It's embarrassing the way some of the teachers here moan.

Spend a few months traveling through Africa, witness how happy so many of these people are despite their sometimes shocking circumstances, and then consider your situation here in Korea.

This is not meant as a sermon. It is as much a reminder to myself to be appreciative for what I have.

I understand the reason why you posted and I even agree with some of what you wrote, but your post isn't very practical or logical. Why would an ESL teacher in Korea compare their salary with a laborer in another country? You are assuming the two jobs are comparable? Is there equality between jobs even in the same country? I work in a public school but I don't consider my job to a priveleged position lol.

I agree with you that all people shouldn't complain unnecessarily and that we should all try and be thankful for what we have but there are MANY legitimate and reasonable complaints on this forum. If you've noticed as well, there are many complainers who get burned for whining and moaning about the dumbest things. Posters like Fromtheuk and that guy Editor. I think most people know the difference between the complaints that are reasonable and those that are not.

When you travel thousands of miles into a foreign country and work hard and try your best but end up getting treated like sh*t you have every right to complain.

I think moaning is one of the healthiest ways to stress out your frustration and stress that's why women are naturally less violent than men. Reading on Dave esl, it's what keep me sane and entertained from the stressful korean workng environment.

Yea I was happy back home with a $9 an hour job, life was nice and simple, I admit Korea did spoil me abit. Anyway on whose authority gave you the right to preach us Pope?

I teach at a Uni where I'm the only foreign teacher. That's right, this whole semester, since March 1st, I've only talked to Koreans, whom I freakin love because they're great to me.

However, I don't have any person, individual, thingy, to vent about being an ex-pat. Well, I do email my homies back in the states who think the beef thing is crazy, but I can't talk to my students about that, as they are all of one opinion, and that's cool man .

Venting is fine as long as you know when and where to do it.

It's all relative. People coming from rich countries expect the same type of accommodations abroad or they get jittery. Going to Korea for a 1st worlder can be a step down whereas to a 3rd worlder it would be a definite step up.

The Africa argument is an enormous cliche, everytime something bad happens you cant just think of that

- I missed the bus I cant believe it(Im not in Africa not in Africa)

- My girlfriend is shaggin me best mate (At least im not in Africa not in Africa)

- I have lost my job and my wifes taken my daughter and run off with her fitness instructor (oh well, at least im not in Africa)

- President X has ruined my country, turned the whole world against my countrymen and left me in financial ruin (nevermind, Africa is worse)
(I wonder what an African would say if you told him that you think of him when things go wrong, so you can feel better about yourself)

and blah blah blah....Its actually a good attitude to have, but it doesnt work in this world because if you turn a blind eye to people trying to shaft and degrade you then youll end up shafted and miserable, you have to get in the game. Not a great way to be but it is what it is.
And people do need to complain sometimes, if enough people complain hard enough then things do change eventually, and when they do we all feel the benefits.


However, I do think you need to be slightly positive where possible, because negativity is infectious and it takes on a life of its own. I had a friend in Korea who began with some small problems, and they snowballed because of said friends negative attitudes.

I myself think the moaners should try and keep their sense of humour, its what we do in England and even though theres alot of problems, its funny to hear someone moaning...you need the gallows humour cos otherwise youll go mad.

The people who just moan for the sake, just cos theyre unhappy and want everyone to know, they get ignored and therein lies your answer - ignore them...stop reading every single post on here and get on with your own life man!!!
