I was asked (told) 5 minutes ago that I have to teach an activity for the KBS crew that has turned up at my school IN 10 MINUTES
They must've seen me at lunch and changed their plans on the spot.
Fantastic!
Can anyone top that lack of notice?
Oh yeah, the activity was explained to me in 60 seconds. I haven't done it before. I hope I don't look like an idiot. |

Just say "No." It's certainly not part of my contract, nor do I work for KBS. |

Yes I should have. I did it and it turned out ok I think. I was about to walk out when the director said his documentary would be on problems in education!
Apparently it's about the rich/poor gap. It better be. It's KBS at least. Not SBS!!
I've earned brownie points with the principal, he had a smile a mile wide afterwards so it wasn't a complete waste of time. |

Don't be surprised if you are on the next anti-foreigner "documentary" (yellow journalism) to grace the Korean airwaves.
I can see it now:
Horangi Munshin: A case study of drugs and AIDS in Korea.

Been there, done that.
Don't refuse, or it'll make you look really bad. They'll just shoot random shots of you for a few minutes and interview a few students and a teacher or director. You'll be lucky to be on TV for more than 8 seconds, and people will only hear you speaking during 2 seconds of that for a quick sound-byte. |

Yep I've done it before at hagwons a few times, actually got recognized from the very short piece that was only on local cable once! I
was pissed at the severe lack of notice and the chance of me looking disorganized since it wasn't my lesson. Everyday this week something has been put on me without notice, that probably added to my attitude today. |

**Update**
I just watched myself on tv. I was expecting a two second bit but they actually showed me for about whole minute!! They focused on the stuff the kids didn't understand unfortunately. Guess the agenda was, poor school kids are crap at English and private school kids are good. |

More likely the agenda was "When Korean teachers teach English, the students understand. When foreigners teach English, they don't" |

Yes, I can't count the number of times!
At my last job, having TV crews show up without notice (to me) was an almost weekly occurance (sometimes more than one/week).
A Korean director/producer would walk in to my classroom and try to start telling me what to do with the students. I was never co-operative and they quickly figured out there were other waygooken 'monkeys' who would look much better on the tube after they edited the tape. |

Possibly They did show students at a private elementary school using English well. (Probably not rehearsed.) At hagwons too. There were bits about Lee Myeong Bak. I really think they were trying to highlight the gap between rich and poor and saying with 2MB it'll only get worse.
I was expecting that, so of course they cut the whole bit with the kids doing the activity using the target language well. I remember smiling too but I looked serious in all the bits they aired. |
