I just did with a fairly good, grade 2 academic HS class. They definitely found if very difficult but they paid attention and tried much more than they usually would for something they find hard. Quite frankly I find it pretty damn hard to understand all of the words, and one blank I had forgotten what the missing word was and needed the help of a couple of the brighter kids who caught it because I didn't.
In any event, as the first major English hit by a Korean band it really goes over well and is a great example of how Koreans can use English. I'd strongly reccommend it. |

if I ever use big bang in class, well...that's just asking for trouble. My students would go ape crazy and request it every time. Then again I'm teaching elementary.. |

Sure. This isn't formatted like how I had it on my handout but you could cut-and-paste it however you liked.

I like the song too but it isn't by far the first big "English" hit by a Korean band......there are a few others but also depends on what you define as a "hit".....
I'll make a karaoke of this for sure -- been busy with other stuff...
But YBS -- I'm not criticizing your teaching implicitly but you continue to use and translate everything little thing you give or do with students. You are reinforcing the grammar translation method which is very much discredited and it should be one of our big roles as teachers here to avoid such promotion. Might look good with your colleagues but that's about it. It is just an easy way to get through and deliver a lesson without having to think too much about how to do it in a whole language approach.
L1 shouldn't be used in this fashion -- that's my opinion. Others can scream about that but I stand by it.

No, I cut-and-pasted it (literally, with scissors and glue) along with some pics onto a two-sided B-4 handout. |

I don't translate everything by any means (or I should say draw on translations - there's no way I could translate this, lol). But with something like a song and with some dialogues I don't think it hurts for them to find out exactly what it means (or what the translator did, to the extent that's possible). In fact for most activities I would prefer to translate only key terms, or pre-teach some of the key vocab with translations, and then go straight into English only. Of course when I only have most of my students once a week at best in classes of 25-30 I'm going to be realistic about how much I can get them thinking in English. I'd prefer to think of it as moving gradually away from GTM than reinforcing it. |

While I agree that this song might not be the most effective way to get students to develop their English abilities, I would think it can be effective. Especially in the situation where high school students sit through the same teaching methods for years, which usually aren't that involving or interesting. I usually do song/fill in the blank lessons after exams are done, when the majority of students think the semester is finished, and they couldn't care less about studying. Something like this sparks their interest, and usually gets them participating in class.

IME with Korean ELLs, the Grammar-Translation Method seems to be what works best for them--at the lowest levels. When they have a substantial amount of vocabulary under their belt, then we can start moving towards CLT.
Plus, when I want to know what the words mean to a foreign song, I look up the translation. It may not be perfect but it does give me a better idea of how the language works.
I just did Rihanna's "Shut Up and Drive" and while it proved to be too difficult for most of my students, having the translation at least kept them interested. fwiw, that would be a great song to do with Academic HS students...just not Tech HS students unless they're especially keen.
This song does look too hard for my classes, but I may use it for the Academic students during summer camp. Thanks, YBs! |

Well we can agree to disagree about the use of Korean in this context.....
But I'm for anything like this that motivates -- just like genezorm states.....
Here is the youtube version of the song I whipped up. Get the karaoke version (which you can slow down a little for better understanding) on EFL Classroom 2.0

Naver has translations - quite accurate from checking with co-teachers - of just about any English song that's popular in Korea. |
