I also thought footprints were terrible to deal with and would never contact them again.

I think so too.

however, the OP's story is confusing and inconsistent. SMOE & EPIK are not the same program. Which contract did you sign? SMOE is only for Seoul. Your recruiter would have told you which program you were applying to.

I do the hiring for my school and I have nothing but good things to say about Ben, Dave, and Ryan at Footprints. They always keep both the school and the teachers up to date with what is happening. They have been a big help trying to figure out the new visa requirements and always provide excellent candidates for hire. In my time at my school, we have hired well over 50 teachers from Footprints and everything has gone smooth, over 50% of our teachers have even signed an extension to stay longer. I am a Footprints alumni myself going on 4 years at the school they put me in contact with.

I know you cannot make everyone happy all the time, but I think Footprints does a far better job than any of the other recruiters I have dealt with.

I'll second the Grumpy Senator.

I have had my own dealings with Footprints and did extensive research before allowing / promoting them freely on my network (everything is free there). They were the only recruiter that 1) were professional and transparent 2) had consistent positive feedback from teachers 3) not just seemed but actually did follow up and provided services beyond just dumping teachers somewhere.

I've been around the block and have nothing but positive things to say about Footprints as an organization. I'll put my own hard work and reputation on the line by vouching for them. They remain the only recruiter I'll so far associate with, for the above reasons.

To the OP -- you definitely are confused and I think it is Footprints, not yourself that is owed amends.

I'd also like to see the mods close or amend the very misleading title of this thread.....

I'm not exactly sure what the problem was. If the potential employee doesn't sign the contract, doesn't Footprints/whoever offered a job have the right to cancel or rescind it for whatever reason?

This guy is such a whiny bitch. I am sure Footprints and whoever else he dealt with had good reasons to drop him no matter how qualified he is.

I was worried when I first opened this post because I have a telephone interview with Footprints on Thursday...

However, after reading the OP's post, and the number of people who have supported FP, I'm feeling a lot better... Thanks everyone!

On balance, it seems that Footprints - like most recruiters - is neither entirely reliable nor completely worthless. They've been helpful for some people and unhelpful for others - because it is DIFFICULT to appropriately judge the quality of any given school. Footprints may very well keep files on the hagwons and PS jobs they advertise, but things change: directors change, students change, money fluctuates and changes hands...there's a certain degree of risk with any foreign teaching assignment.

To the extent that I've needed them (to answer questions, etc.) they've always been accessible. To the extent that I happen to really like my job, I'm grateful for their placement support. But teachers should do their homework, and do it carefully; the OP's confusion over some basics suggests that he relied too heavily on a handful of emails with an overworked recruiter. When one is traveling across the world to work in a foreign and rather misunderstood land, one ought to take advantage of the plethora of information available and find out as much as possible to avoid an unpleasant let-down upon arrival.

Just my two cents.

I used Footprints. I had to because SMOE only hired through recruiters. From my impression, they do communicate a lot and also try to build support services for their new hires (mentor service, newsletters, etc...)

My experience was good enough where I would feel comfortable recommending them to someone I knew.

I absolutly agree... Why would anyone go around the world with no real knowledge of what they're getting into?...

I think that some of us have been away from our home countries too long to realize what professionalism (or a lack of it) means to a job applicant. The OP did nothing wrong.
