I'm wondering, in the summer heat, are there swimming pools to go to? A municipal pool or something like that? I'm going to be an hour from the beach, would my best bet be to just make the trek on the weekends? Which brings me to the bikinis.... I wear them, I have tattoos, I'm pretty in shape and toned... is this going to be a problem for me to be laying around half naked, inked up, oiled up, and bronzing in the sun?

I'm all for being respectful of the local culture and thought this might be a good point to look into before I jump on my plane next week Smile While it's completely acceptable in Europe to lay around half naked, I realize this might not be the case in other places, I understand that. I am however, quite the sun lover and when its' hot, there's nothing better than a cold pool or an ocean Smile

Thanks!

go for it, there are quite a few koreans with tatoos, don't worry about it, the only thing that might freak them out is that you're not sitting under an umbrella in the sun

there are some pools, although i don't know how many are outside...i would definitely shoot for the beach!!!

as for tattoos and bikinis- i had three tattoos when i was last there and wore a bikini quite often and i had no worries. many of the university students were shocked at the foreigners showing so much skin, but then...pretty much everything shocked them! Smile

Depending on the beach the only problem you may have is finding any sunshine in the massive expanse of large umbrellas.

I went to Haeundae Beach in Busan last year and the year before that. Two years ago, no bikinis. None. I was there for three days for several hours each day.

The year after that (last year) was like a revolution; lots of bikinis. The culture changes quickly. You should be fine.

Seoul, Itaewon, Hamilton Hotel pool: tatooed Korean men in women's thong bikini bottoms......

I think my students are shocked/appauled by my desire to tan.

Has Korea finally appealed their law against tattoos? I don't think I have ever seen a Korean with a real tattoo.

You haven't been to the beach lately, then. Wall to wall bikinis and speedos last time I went.

The Hamilton Hotel pool is where it's at. More ink than a printing press at that place, on both guys and girls. 99% of the girls are in bikinis, and most of the Korean guys are sporting banana hammocks as well.

Make sure you get there as soon as they open, though. The place fills up quickly, and it's tough to get a chair after 10:30.

Morning crowd is mostly Korean. After 2 or so, once the expats roll out of bed from Friday and Saturday night binging the crowd diversifies a bit.

The highlight of Sunday was the guy who busted out the bagpipes and started wailing away, much to the chagrin of the pool manager, who got into a shoving match with a couple of guys surrounding Danny Boy. Laughing
