I will be out there in a month, don't know any Korean, and don't know what to expect from the Korean culture. Any books that will help me understand how to approach every day situations? How to understand basic language/phrases/alphabet? I figure it is probably more realistic to better understand the culture rather than learn the language.... |

The Koreans is a good read. Probably the best thing to read first, as I know very few people who've read it and disagree with what's written. I'd also suggest Korea's Place in the Sun by Bruce Cumings and Korea: A Walk Through The Land of Miracles by Simon Winchester. Breen is the best for a glimpse of Korea from a more societal point of view, Cumings offers a fantastic look at Korea from a historical and political perspective, and Winchester's account of his trip through Korea on foot in the late '80s provides an excellent picture of how much things have change over the last twenty years. |
