Here's an interesting article which shows the percentages of overweight / obese people in Canada's major cities. Vancouver "wins" with a nation-wide low of "just" 12%.
Yes, if you know 100 people in Vancouver, 12 of them are probably overweight or obese.
Halifax is the healthiest east coast city at 18%, but Hamilton is the "Biggest Loser" at a staggering 74%!
Edmonton weighs in at some 62%, Toronto & Montreal come in at 51%, but both St. John & St. John's both thunder in at a whopp(er)ing 70% overweight or obese.
T'underin' Jaysus, b'ye, I t'ought all dem marritimmers was on the Pogie. What the hell dey bin eatin out dere? |

Holy smokes, those numbers are crazy!
I think the reason it shows Newfies as so fat is that there's only a few of them left in Newfoundland, and those are the ones who were too sedentary to leave. Now there's very little competition for the lobster rolls and screech; hence, of the 100 people remaining, 70 of them are fat.
As for why Van is so thin--it's the blow, I'm sure.
Or perhaps, this bizarre and painful new weight-loss method...

They must have just done Vancouver proper, not the suburbs. I'm surprised Montreal has such high numbers. When I lived there I actually thought the general population was thinner than greater Vancouver. |

Because there are just as many fat people in every other little town in Saskatchewan. |

Vancouver has to be most competitive place to live in Canada. Fatsos are not going to make it here. If you don't have the smarts, skills and appearance, you'll never afford it. Added to that there is little or no parking, and what there is costs a fortune. So we walk and stay fit.
In fact, whenever I go east of Main St, which is not very often, it is kind of shocking to see the blobs oozing into the grease factory of the Golden Arches. |

They're using the BMI.
Overweight: BMI of 25 or higher.
Obese: BMI of 30 or higher. |

That means body builders are going to register as overweight too. Might be worth noting if there are significant numbers of them in any of those places. Probably not though, eh? |
