I met plenty of Korean tourists in Thailand. I also saw many in Cambodia and after being in Cambodia for a few days, you will feel completely comfortable eating food off any Bangkok pavement.

Well, you can meet people in some locales in North America who haven't been outside of their state and don't really think about it. However, I think many of them if you told them they could go abroad, then they wouldn't mind the trip, I assume. I haven't met students who said they only love Korea. But there were those who said they are not interested in going to other countries.

There is nothing wrong with that. If that's what that person wants, so be it. However, putting down other countries in a bad way is not nice. However, I can't say the cleanliness of a country isn't important or if I would be concerned about getting sick. I would rather go to Turkey than Egypt. I never got sick in Turkey. I got sick over and over in Egypt and found it hard to find a clean toilet. That's not a selling point for a tourist, but I would go to Egypt again because of the pyramids, the Red Sea, and there are enough people around. Many Koreans have nice things to say about Canada and to some extent the US and NZ. Anyway, for some of us Korea may seem dirty compared to our countries, non? But for me, I don't care that much about it being a bit dirty. I just like a place to be friendly, have clean bathrooms, welcoming people, tourist spots etc....
Korea on the welcoming part and promoting tourist spots... It has potential. At least, Thailand, dirty as it might be in some areas, welcomes tourists...

I don't know if any of you are aware of the bickering that goes on between Koreans and Chinese on the internet. It's really quite pathetic. The Koreans really thought they could charm the Chinese with their "Korean Wave", but as soon as they showed what kind of ignorant bozos they really can be, the Chinese were totally turned off.

China's got its problems, but when Koreans say they don't like China, I just wince. What else can you do with these folks?

By the way, I stopped saying "I like China" a long, long time ago.

It's a lot more complicated than the Korean wave and some Internet bickering. China's been twisting and manipulating historical facts about Korea for a long time, and Koreans are pretty bitter about it.

We aren't representative of your average American or Canadian back home. Many of us have traveled to many countries, but there are so many back home who haven't been outside of their province or state.
I remember once when I went to a part of Oklahoma and we asked where we could find an ATM machine and this fellow asked us "What are you going to do with it?". I am not joking, by the way. It's a true story, and they had like the oldest cash registers I had seen in the U.S. That was back in 1994. However, for those people it is not because they feel insecure about other countries competing with the U.S. or Canada.
They just could care less. Or, I could be wrong, but that's my impression. Some Koreans, on the other hand, sometimes feel they must make a point to insult other countries or to say they don't like dark-skinned people, because they are dirty. Now, I did hear a student say that.
I wouldn't lie about that stuff... I sort of believe the OP.

No I believe you, trust me. I was just commenting in a slightly sarcastic manner that's exactly how the people in my home state are. Or at least south Missouri. MY relatives vacation in Kansas for crying out loud.

Whats your bitter grievance against HK Chinese women exactly?

granted i've only met two but they seemed perfectly cool, down to earth and fun to be around.....

I have many HK women friends and they can be quite sensitive about who they are friendly with. If they feel uncomfortable with so meone they can be quite "cold." I also remember a holiday in Singapore and was shocked at how friendly everyone seemed. It was quite a contrast after having been in HK for so long. I think HK has changed a lot and the ppl are a bit more friendly now.

HK can grow on you - it attacks the senses with all the activity and colors everywhere. It has to have one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. There is nothing like taking the ferry across the harbor at night.

Don't belittle the korean wave. I also thought the idea was laughable. I recently spoke to some of my thai friends. They say that the teenagers in thailand are Korea mad. Many even have cut their hair into fringes and spent massive amounts of money to dress like Koreans. Thai's don't know any better I thought...next my friend from Singapore told me that it's taking over there too. It's already throughout Vietnam. Korean men are considered the studs of Asia.

It's crazy to anyone that's been to Korea , but Koreans are good liars at marketing themselves through their drama's I suppose. You could not get two more opposite and unmatching people than a Korean and a Thai....Korean hapilly admit that...if only the Thai's knew...

I too am from Missouri and find it very boring because it's in a state of going backwards. Yes, Backwards! Regressing. It's so stupid and downright asinine.

To the topic. When I was in Korea last year listening to music out loud on my notebook in my apartment, Korean neighbors were about to fight me when I was listening to music videos of other Asian countries. There is little privacy due to thin walls and lightweight houses. They hate music, art, and culture from other Asian countries as it's often far outgoing than theirs and challenges their pride. (not what I want to do) I was checking out music from Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia one evening and the whole neighborhood could hear my litta laptop playing non-Korean Asian music. This didn't go down too well and was directly opposed at my door! It's a fact that I was bored with Korean music and culture and was looking for broader horizons. Not to mention how lonesome I felt being all by myself with no English speaking people or happening scene to visit to get a taste of something different from old Korean people set in their ways. The neighbors were not friendly folks, but antisocial ones who just stared their eyes out for a year straight. I did indeed feel unwelcome, but it was well known that this dong was not a friendly nor popular one. Some space, peace, and quiet would do everyone good so I'm movin to the country to eat a lot of peaches and trout.

The Average pay for an ESL teacher is about $2.00 an hour higher in Phnom Penn Cambodia than it is for a 4 year college grad in Springfield Missouri.
So Missouri isn't backward eh? I've traveled all over the world also and I haven't found anyplace where I couldn't make more money than I could back home.
Oh and as for party cove....Well I guess how successful you are with the naked ladies depends on who REALLY owns that boat. What's your boat like?

I have heard this before and I find it quite surprising. I think many Koreans love to travel and that loving something about another country in no way diminishes your love for your own country.

I think most of us have a love for travel and experiencing other cultures. It is just weird to find people who are threatened by it. I am sure this attitude exists everywhere, but having the opposite attitude always makes me feel sad for a person that can't not, or do not want to see and expereince other cultures and people. Well to each their own.

Oh, the guy asked me if I liked China. I said that I did. (I lived in Hong Kong for 15 years). He went on to tell me how much he hated China. I asked him when he was there. he said he had never been there. He has never been out of Korea.

You get a certain amount of that here. It seems to be something that has been used by the previous dictatorship and the current democracy as a way of protecting Korean business interests. It seems to be used to promote teamwork within the country, keep Koreans supporting Korean products and keep foreign products and investment out of the country. As a small fish in a big pond with a strong desire to recover from the evils that have happened to it....the Japanese, Communism, and the bombing of the country by the US during the Korean War, they kind of feel they need it (although it was the bombing that liberated them....they feel very opressed by a much stronger country that doesn't really act like a big brother but often seems to act like a Pimp protecting a prostitute....this of course could and probably will be debated..as it should).

I continually have students and friends who express disdain for all things foreign....even though they seem to really like me, American movies, German cars, Japanese fashion. It is a little wierd and it is the reason I think this sort of sentiment has been taught in order to support Korean products rather than actually being racism or ignorance.

I love only Korean food!!! I AM KOREAN!!!
I like only Korean girls!!! I AM KOREAN!
I eat only Korean beef, Korea is better than Thailand......the list goes on

It seems like a bunch of very broad generalizations that have been created by someone in power.

then again every culture has their silly little patriotisms

Canadians love Canadian beer....even though the difference between Canuck beer and US beer is minimal and the Irish really have the market cornered...

American truck owners proudly argue over which truck is better, Ford or Chevy....who the hell cares, Toyota kicks arse.

My father only travels outside the country to resorts...he's is scared of the locals in those poor countries.

Sarcasm?

Never been more serious in my life, the HK Chinese are some of the most humourless, unfriendliest, rascist, materialistic people on Earth. Theyre really quite the opposite of their fun loving cousins on the mainland.

Nice attitude. I'm about to move to Hong Kong. My boyfriend is an HK Chinese. He and his friends are terrific. A number of other friends of mine are also HK Chinese. They are nothing like what you describe. Therefore, the problem's not with them, so it must be you. I'm guessing you must have had a bad experience there because the locals and the other expats thought you were a wanker.
